The Student Council presented an assembly in which members of the student .body spoke about being different, and doing things differently. The Student Council also put on a skit to help encourage students to be different. Following the assembly, the students were given a color code, and encouraged to sit at the table with their color on it for lunch. The idea of this was activity was to encourage students to get to know others in the school The students that participated in the activity for lunch really enjoyed it, and got to know many of their fellow students. Dane Carlson Author Brandon Sanderson visits SFHS Rebecca Smith SFHS The author Brandon Sanderson came to SFHS and talked to the students. He talked to the students and taught them while simultaneously entertaining everyone. He gave examples that matched any type of student from the geeks to the guitar kids. However, the best trait that he showed was that he talked to his audience in a way that his audience understood; he spoke to us not at us. Mr. Sanderson was a very humorous speaker. The first thing Brandon Sanderson did at the assembly was give a self-introduction. He grew up in Nebraska and is currently studying at BYU. Elantris was his first book published and DreamWorks is contracting with him to make a movie based off "Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians." The second thing that he said was what he wanted us to learn from him. "If there was one thing that I wanted you to come away learning from today, was to remember that Brandon Sanderson is awesome. But if there was another thing, it would be that ordinary people go on to do extra ordinary things." Then much of the rest of the lime he iiavc hope. He talked about how every person can do ihe job of llieii dreams. However he did say, "Job* , don't find you, you have lo work to get it.'1 Along with thk he told a story of two people he knew, one who was capable of becoming a professional artist. The other was a linkknown guitarist. The guitarist worked hard and became the lead eleciical guitarist in a famous hand. The arlist became a sewage plants's chemical engineer. One worked for his dream; the other didn't. He also went on lo say, "You can make money as a writer." However, he knew he didn't have ihirraw unYm that many of today's best writers have. He said, "I realized that 1 was just going to have to write more books and work harder then they do." His advice to the students working for their dream was, "...work hard, learn to love it and be willing to suck at it ... Set aside a time for it. Even a couple hours a week. Two hours every Saturday will work too...Try what works for you and do it....Start with an emotion* and work with it." For most of these ideas he was talking about writing; however, he also said that they would work for all dreams. Brandon Sanderson was an awesome motivotional speaker. |
