Show -N E W S- Spanish Fork B2 • WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2007 Whitney Holm Wrestling: a family tradition Guest Editorial Jed Ashworth In the foyer of the Spanish Fork High School gym there is a wall with names and pictures of wrestlers that have placed or won the state title. If you read and look deep into the wall, you'll recognize something else besides the 184 state placers. Among all those state placers, there are 41 brothers and two sets of fathers and sons. I've been around wrestling going on 32 years. In Delta there isn't a high school with family ties so deep into wrestling. Spanish Fork has always been known as a great baseball town, and I'm here to tell you that it's one of the best around. However, the sport of wrestling is right up there with baseball in Spanish Fork. When you talk wrestling with somebody that has been around the sport, either from Spanish Fork or any other town in Utah, you can mention certain names and they will recognize them or have something good to say. Mention the Argyle family or the Shepherds and, if they've been around wrestling, they've heard of them. There are two Shepherd families who are involved with Spanish Fork wrestling. The Lake Shore Shepherds had four brothers, and they had three state championships and five state placers. They also had a father and 'son which, between them, had three state placers. Then there are the Shepherds from Spanish Fork. These Shepherds also had four brothers with three state champions. The three state champions came from one of them, and he was probably the best that has wrestled in Spanish Fork. The other three had three state places. The Argyle boys from Benjamin are feared everywhere in the state. There are five brothers total, and nine state placers among them. The state title eluded these five brothers, but this family deserved one. The Clark family has also I; dominated in the sport of wrestling. They have three brothers that have gone through the school have placed at state nine times. Between two of them they have three state titles. There is still one more Clark in high school that hasn't made his mark, but trust me, he will. Wrestling is a great sport. It teaches many life lessons that all young men will carry into adulthood. Wrestling teaches dedication, sacrifice and how to work hard. It also teaches that when you've been beat you have to get back up and work harder. What other lessons from a sport can you carry on to a career, a marriage, or a family? Spanish Fork is very lucky to have the men that we have wrestling. We have two retired college coaches still involved with Spanish Fork wrestling. The Spanish Fork recreation program is one of the biggest in the state. Spanish Fork also has a club team, the Diamondbacks, that is one of the best in the state. I've been so fortunate to be a part of all these programs. These 41 brothers and two father and sons have 91 state places and 23 state championships. I've had the privilege to wrestle with nine of them and the great privilege to coach 17 of them. I've also had the privilege and honor to be a part of this list with my son. The number of state places will continue to grow this year. Here is a list of all the great families that have had success in Spanish Fork Wrestling: Fred and John Allan; Jay and Joe Allredge; Jess, Guy, Keith, Wade and Layne Argyle; Jed and Kaleb Ashworth; Garrett and Dave Beagley; Ted, Jeb and Brad Clark; Garrett and Jared Elliott; TJ. and TateBrindley; Kenneth and Steven Gull; Thayn and Thad Nebeker; Kyle and Lance Wilson; Darin, Gentry and Aaron Stevens; Layne, Brent, Joel, J.D. and Brady Shepherd; Shawn, Travis, Trent and Lance Shepherd; Travis and Lance Harmon; Joe, Jordon and Jed Webb; Glen and Mike Tanner; and Clint and Kyle Weight. •! n i - ' We've got you . covered SENIOR SIGNS: Softball standout Whitney Holm has signed a letter of intent to play for Dixie State College.
