In all serious- ness in deep earnestness millions of people ask themselves "Why is it? What's the secret" No person knows all the answers it seems a cruel fate de- Iliberately delights in knocking down certain "hard luck" individuals Some- times economic conditions get out of control Other reasons pop up that seem to hold a person back But from hundreds of case histories we can say that a person usually holds his future in his own hands We have to learn to pull up our own anchors! Most of us have certain traits and characteristics that have to be over- come or wel are held in check We must learn to weigh anchor tor our of destiny The following are 10 anchors that I have watched hold in small back- many people anchored water harbors First if you want to succeed in this complex and competitive world today you must continue learning We've all seen people without much formal education make a grand success of life We see high school and col- lege graduates who never get beyond first base! Why? "Can I overcome my shyness?" asked a mature woman the other day "I like to be in activities in the club and church I like people But I am afraid of pressing opinions I'm willing to serve on a committee but to be a chairman of a committee and have to stand up before an audience to make a report the thought petrifies me!" Well there's only one answer so far as psychologists know You can overcome your fear of accepting re-tsponsibility if you're willing to pay the price iktake up your mind that you will accept every chance that comes along for increasing your responsibil- ity! It will be hard the first few times! Literally lions of earnest hardworking men "QEVEN and women never started in life in ' N : ' 4 NEXT there are three practical everyday points that may be grouped together Criticitis Boastitis and Talk-M- s We all know people who are afflicted with these three common dis eases Criticism boasting and too much talking and saying nothing have been anchors for great numbers of people They are drags in both business and personal life We react negatively to them Study yourself—and if you are guilty of any or all eliminate them from your lines Fifth there is a large group of otherwise intelligent people who have a millstone hung around their necks heed "I believe in the Lucky Break!" "Perhaps I'll he earning my own living all my life! And I've wasted years I didn't think it was important to try to get ahead Had I better change to another firm and start all over?" A great many younger people in the first few years of work harm themselves by hanging onto this anchor "Fitness for the job first pleasures afterward" ought to be the motto Give yourself a checking Ninth over for personal peculiarities and idiosyncrasies that you may feel are destructive but which in reality label YOU as "Eccentric" I recall a saying of a favorite colIle was supposed to lege professor it was really a but tepch history course in learning how to live effecIt tively in this complicated world sub-p- ar c i? No matter What limp dead-fis- h other qualifications a man or woman had they had to pass this test first Dress manners and speech are all Important They tell the world what I've turned you think of yourself down applicants for jobs because they were sloppily dreswd chewed gum! (actually a girl came in over-dress- ed —- to see me with a cud of gum unckr her (ongue) becau-- e they make grammatical errors because they seemed to have a chip on their shoulders Last of all remember there's no time limit on when you can heave up your anchors! Life doesn't begin at 40! Nor at 20 or 30! It begins every morning when you throw back the bed covers to stait a new day There are about two billion 'human beings on this planet and there ate onty two things they all have in conunon One is a desire for happiness the other is 21 hours a day You have the same amount of time each day that all other human !icings have The quegion is: How will you use it You can hang onto all the invidious anchors that miserable are holding you back!
