Show Volume VIII Issue XII THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 13 October 1, 2003 Readin’ in Eden Readin’ in Eden is a new informal reading group that has been organized for Valley residents and their friends and family. The inclusive group hopes to attract a diverse readership of all ages and backgrounds to the monthly meetings that will be held on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. During a 12-month period, participants will be reading and discussing books from a varied list, including fiction and non-fiction, current events, biographies, poetry and short stories, and religious and motivational themes. The book choice for October is Cry the Beloved County by Alan Paton. Discussion notes will be included in The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS each month, along with a suggested reading list. Participants may also benefit from a used book exchange that will be offered at each meeting, so plan on bringing your dog-eared used books to exchange for a title you haven’t read yet. Come and attend as many, or as few, of meetings as you would like. If you would like to attend the October meeting, contact Martha Schichedanz at 745-3688. Hand-made Books & Joe Dixon Prints on Display Hand-made Books and Joe Dixon Prints will be on display September 15 through October 31 at the Lorna Wattis Swanson Gallery Ogden Valley Branch Library. They can be viewed during library hours: Monday - Thursday: 10:00 a.m. — 9:00 p.m. Friday - Saturday: 10:00 a.m. — 6:00 p.m. Sunday: 1:00 p.m. — 5:00 p.m. Joe Dixon Prints Prints on display by Ogden artist Joe Dixon include twenty-eight works with a variety of etchings, woodcuts, and collages. After a twenty-eight year career as a history professor, Joe Dixon traded his academic robes for a printmaker’s apron. He has studied with Moishe Smith, Sid Chafetz, Carol Summers, Giorgio Upghilio, and Susan Makov. For eight years, Dixon printed for Harry Taylor. Joe Dixon’s prints can be found in the collections of a small, select group of connoisseurs. Miniature versions of Dixon’s prints are printed onto greeting cards, which are available for sale at the library for $15.00 per box. For more information, call the library at 745-2220. Hand-made Books Hand-made books and framed calligraphy by members of the Utah Calligraphic Guild are also on display at the Ogden Valley Branch Library in Huntsville. The exhibit includes over fifty examples of hand-made books, demonstrating the infinite possibilities of paper, art, and text, combined with skill and imagination. Foodabet, for example, is an alphabet book with illustrated food for each letter that folds out like an accordion. Created by Mary Wells, the hand-made book received an Honorable Mention Award from the judges of the Key Ingredients: America By Food Art Exhibition, which was recently held at the library. From that single piece of art, the current group show was developed as Wells invited her colleagues from the Utah Calligraphic Guild to show their works too. Other works include an International Code Flag Book, a Deconstructed Alphabet Book, books that look like houses, a window book, a clam shell book, accordion-folding haiku books, and blank journals of all kinds and sizes. One of the large-scale works incorporates a box enclosing an eagle feather that leaps up off the page. Made by Carole Taylor, the book is based on an excerpt from Many Winters: Prose and Poetry of the Pueblos by Nancy Wood. Wells is president of the Utah Calligraphic Guild, and estimates there are about one hundred members statewide. Members meet monthly to learn book-making techniques and to show-off works in progress. The organization sponsors two major workshops per year. The next upcoming event will be on October 24 and 25, and is co-sponsored by the Book Arts Program at the University of Utah. The program will be held in the Books Arts Studio, Marriott Library, 5th floor. “Every Page Is A Stage,” is the name of the workshop to be conducted by Betty Locke of Canada. Calligraphers are challenged to react to the blank page in new and different ways. Calligraphic exercises are explored and discussed. Critical strategies are developed.
