Show Volume VIII Issue XII THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 11 October 1, 2003 Eccles Community Art Center Exhibits Artwork — Participates in Ogden City’s Celebrate The Arts Event The Eccles Community Art Center, 2580 Jefferson Avenue, Ogden will be displaying paintings by Ogden artist Meri DeCaria, and John Collins of Salt Lake City in the Main Gallery during October. The Carriage House Gallery will feature the works of West Valley City artist, Nora Del Murdock. Exhibits will continue through November 1. the southern part of the state and in Hawaii. John has collaborated with his father and sister on mural painting projects in Seattle, Salt Lake City, Hawaii, and Los Angeles. Over the years John has participated in art shows in Salt Lake City, Hawaii, Ogden, and Park City, selling paintings to people from all over the world. Meri DeCaria, a graduate from the American College in London, England, has studied at the Pratt School of Design, New York City, and the Art Institute of Philadelphia, in Pennsylvania. Living and producing art in an age where social commentary and complex, visually difficult imagery are commonplace, Ms. DeCaria chooses to work in a more whimsical manner. Her work may even appear to be frivolous (with her use of brightly colored surfaces), but after a moments notice the viewer can see the topsy-turvy life presented on the canvas. Homes and other objects standing on their heads, moving in a mock inverted dance, portray the imbalance and uncertainty of contemporary life. There is a sense of impending movement and flux in much of her work. Ms. DeCaria was recently commissioned by TRAX, the Utah Transit Authorities light rail system, to paint several panels on the railing at the Ballpark station. She has also completed public commissions for the Metro Sports Club in the ZCMI Mall and Gastronomy’s Oyster Bar in Salt Lake City. Nora Del Murdock says, “The wall-towall city environment of southern California created in me a yearning for space without endless concrete, asphalt, and cacophony. The move to Utah, at the time, was ideal. Here were deserts, mountains, rivers, and lakes; but most importantly, openness and simple silence. John Collins was born in Provo, Utah in 1962. He grew up in an artistic environment with his father Gary Collins and his sister Chris, who are both artists. In 1981 John received a high school scholarship award to attend the University of Utah where he studied fine art and design. John enjoyed his experience at the University where he was able to expand and develop his different interests from painting and printing to design and illustration. Even though John enjoys working in a variety of different mediums (watercolor, oil, acrylic, and Lithography), he also likes to paint in many different styles—traditional, contemporary, pop, and experimental—using a variety of subject matter. Collins currently lives in Salt Lake City but spends a great deal of time painting in “Over the past 40 plus years, the areas I once roamed have been transformed into ever-widening clusters of subdivisions. Hotels, motels, strip malls, and chain stores have replaced the quaintness of small-town life. My grandfather’s fruit farm, where I learned the value of labor, has been paved over and converted into a National Guard armory. “I continue to seek out space and simplicity in the hope of documenting the landscape I love before it all becomes simply a memory.” Nora Del Murdock’s work has been accepted in shows including the Springville Museum of Art, the Bountiful/Davis Art Center, The Eccles Community Art Center, Hogle Zoo, and the Utah Arts Council Traveling Exhibit. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Utah. Please join us for an opening reception for these exhibits on Friday, October 3 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The public is invited. We are participating in the Historic 25 street stroll.
