Community invited to enjoy a day of good music, food, gondola rides, and hiking Huntsville—Snowbasin’s fourth annual Uphill Downhill Race takes place on October 4. This year, a festive atmosphere made up of music, food, hiking, and autumn colors will surround the running race. High on the mountain at the Needles Lodge, barbecued bratwurst will be served and a Bavarian polka band will play; while at the base area’s Snowbasin Plaza, Jamaican music and barbecued “jerk” chicken will be featured. The race will begin at 9:00 a.m. from the base area. Runners will follow a marked course to the Needles Lodge, a vertical gain of 2,300 feet. The top of the course will mark the finish line of the Uphill portion of the race, but those who want a greater challenge may choose the Uphill-Downhill Combined, which takes runners back to the base. Athletes may enter the race in one of seven age categories divided by gender, as well as by which of the two races they run. Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in each category during the awards ceremony on the Snowbasin Plaza at 1:00 p.m. All contestants will receive gift bags. Visitors not in the race will find plenty to do besides cheering on the contestants—listening to music and eating good food. The gondola to the high-alpine Needles Lodge will run from 8:00 a.m. Hiking on Snowbasin’s trail system is available, including an easy climb to the ridgeline with its beautiful views of the Great Salt Lake far below. The Grizzly Center, Snowbasin’s premier-quality store on the Plaza, will be open all day, and skiers can get a jump on the winter season by purchasing their season pass or discount card, leasing a ski locker, or buying some new ski fashions and accessories. The Needles Gondola will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with the last trip up leaving at 5:30 p.m. The gondola pass, which is good all day, costs $3 for 12-andunders; and $6 for everyone else. Every gondola ticket purchased is good for one entry in a drawing for a Snowbasin season pass. The Bavarian Barbecue at Needles Lodge will be served from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; while the Jamaican picnic is available on the Plaza from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Snacks and drinks are available all day in both locations. Contestants may register from 7:00 to 8:45 a.m. on the day of the race, or pre-register by calling 801-610-1000, writing to info@snowbasin.com or by downloading a registration form at www.snowbasin.com and sending it in. The pre-registration fee is $30. Registration on the day of the race costs $35. Inaugural edition of the Valley Views magazine. According to OVBA President Paul Judd, “It’s just amazing that our organization is only a little over two years young and we now have a beautiful full-color magazine, a great map of the Valley, and an incredible website.” The magazine includes an overview of area recreation throughout the seasons, profiles of a local artist, an old-timer and newcomers, and is chock full of useful information for residents and visitors alike. Paul added, “The first goal of the magazine is to showcase our member businesses to one another. There are now 88 members in the OVBA, and both the Valley Views Magazine and our website provide one-stop shopping for members trying to reach one another. The second goal was to create a sense of place for the Upper Ogden Valley for the destination tourist market. So often, people come hear and exclaim, ‘I never knew this place existed—it’s so beautiful!’” Distribution plans include local distribution within the Valley at member businesses, the Ogden/Weber Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Utah Travel Council, and major hotels and rental car agencies along the Wasatch Front. Of course, web surfers can also order a copy of the magazine by going to www.ovba.org According to Magazine Committee Chair Nancy Seraphin, “This team of volunteers was amazing. The amount of time they committed to this project was astounding. I’d like to publicly recognize each of them for their efforts and congratulate them on a job well done: Jim Halay, Drienie Hattingh, Rob King, Pamela Mitchell, Clay Murphy, and Janice Yoak. Thanks so much!” Subscriptions available for out of area residents at $18.00 annually.
