Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 4 Volume VIII Issue XII October 1, 2003 Weber Pathways Update By Sally Neill, Weber Pathways Chair “Biophilia—a partly genetic tendency by humans to respond positively to nature.” — E. O. Wilson Most of us have known for some time that nature can have a remarkable effect on our emotions. A simple breath of fresh air, after being indoors all, day can revive lost energy. Better yet, a hike on a wooded trail, Ulrich, a Texas A&M University professor and leading researcher in the affects of environment on behavior, suggests that humans are “hard-wired” to nature, so much that we seek to exploit it when we need to relieve our stress. Our “addiction” to nature becomes apparent when we break free from work and eagerly head for the hills, parks, woods, and streams that seem to quietly absorb and dissipate the stress of our daily lives. Now, according to Dr. Ulrich, there are scientific data that show there are definite psychological and environmental factors affecting physiological systems and health status. A recent study has shown that people exposed to nature recover from stress more quickly than those who are not, and this positive effect happens sometimes within minutes. Another study has found that simply viewing a beautiful landscape can lower blood pressure and pulse rate, and even Ogden Divide road, eventually reaching Box Elder County. When completed, this section will add seven miles of new trail for hikers, bikers, and equestrians. Much of the route will follow the existing power line on the mountain. Utah Power is a willing supporter, and is working to assist Weber Pathways in creating this trail. Plans are underway to determine a trailhead location Guests at the Weber Pathways' T.G.I. Fiesta Fundraiser held September 19 were entertained by "south of the border" cuisine, music, and dancing at the Ogden River Parkway MTC Park. All proceeds collected from the spicy event will go toward the promotion, planning, and preservation of non-motorized pathways and open spaces in Weber County. human exposure to the natural environment is greater than ever. Weber Pathways’ mission is to “promote, plan, and preserve nonmotorized public pathways and related open spaces throughout Weber County.” To that end, we hope to facilitate “hard-wiring” and help promote “addiction” to nature. Our Board of Trustees is focused and committed towards this effort, and we welcome any and all support from the community. We’d love to hear from you. Meanwhile, good-bye stress, hello trails! Weber County Trail Projects Guests enjoying the Weber Pathways T.G.I. Fiesta dinner were seranaded. Afterwards, prizes were raffled off, including gourmet lunches and guided day hikes, bird walks, trail rides, canoe floats, cross-country ski tours, and even a family overnight stay in Weber County's Miles Goodyear cabin at Fort Buenaventura. a float down a river, a horseback ride in the increase the brain activity that controls mountains—all have restorative powers on mood-lifting feelings. Progress on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail South is slow but steady, and a possible route contour has been identified south of Beus Canyon. In the western part of the county, in Farr West and Marriott-Slaterville, our trials committee has been pursuing the idea of a pathway along the Willard Canal. After two meetings with the Bureau of Reclamation, however, the committee has decided to put the effort on hold. The BOR, which owns the canal, has denied permission to use the roads along the banks, citing liability concerns about the open canal as the prohibitive reason. Nevertheless, Marriott-Slaterville intends, eventually, to create a path in this area as private land is developed. Weber Pathways will continue to be a resource to them and other communities whenever needed. ****************************** The Ogden Valley chapter of Weber Pathways will meet at the at the Ogden Valley Branch Library in Huntsville at 7:00 p.m. on October 1, 2003. Agenda items include an update on the Ogden Valley Pathways Master Plan, and discussion on the proposed Pineview Loop Trail System plan. The community is invited to attend.
