The Surgeon General, along with SLOC President and CEO Mitt Romney inaugurated the first Gold Medal Mile legacy site at the Gallivan Center with a kick-off walk. This site is the first of 30 that will be located throughout the state. The Gold Medal Mile legacy sites are one-mile courses, marked with signage, that offer Utah residents a convenient avenue to participate in physical activity on a daily basis. “We welcome the Surgeon General’s support and participation in this legacy program, “ said Romney. “Just like Olympians, making the commitment is 80 percent of the formula for success. We are hoping that Utahns will make the commitment to wellness and healthy lifestyles.” “It is evident A Healthier You 2002 has been successful in incorporating all the elements of a healthy standard of living into its program,” said Dr. Satcher. “Gold Medal Mile legacy sites will benefit Utah residents by offering numerous sites for physical activity.” People interested in participating in future walks are encouraged to pre-register at www.saltlake2002.com (under education) or by calling and asking for A Healthier You 2002 at 801-2122002. The first 200 registered participants for future walks will receive a Gold Medal Mile pin. The legacy sites are funded through grants from the Utah Dept. of Health’s Cardiovascular Health Program and the Centers for Disease Control.
