Show Volume IV, Issue II THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 13 May 1, 2001 Drugging our Children The second of a two part article By Lewis D. Harper, DC In the last article, we talked about using medication to treat cold and flu symptoms in our children. In this segment we are going to discuss medicating our children with antibiotics and behavioral drugs. One of the most common childhood ailments that antibiotics are used for in the United States today is Otitis Media or ear infection. Stuart B. Levy, M.D., a professor of medicine and molecular biology at Tufts University School of Medicine stated, “In the last twentyfive years, the miracle of antibiotics has boomeranged. The list of antibiotics that are no longer effective in treating illnesses is long and unparalleled. And this lack of response is due, in large measure, to overuse and misuse of these antibiotics.” The World Health Organization agreed with Dr. Levy in a report published in 1996. The report said, “the uncontrolled and inappropriate use of antibiotics, is one of the primary reasons for the outbreak of drug-resistant strains of infectious diseases. They are used by too many people to treat the wrong kind of infections at the wrong dosage and for the wrong period of time.” Dr. Levy went on to state, “So far we have been able to stay a step ahead of most drug resistant bacteria by creating newer, more powerful drugs. But for how much longer? Every person taking an antibiotic potentially contributes a little bit to the environmental pool of resistant bacteria.” TOURNAMENT cont. from page 1 squad each performed between games and at half-times to a supportive crowd. Proceeds from the game will benefit Snowcrest’s Athletic Department. Vern Iverson and Kirt Motta would like to thank all those who participated and helped during the tournament. Vern’s wife Kim, would really like for someone else to volunteer to take over next year’s tournament (she’s tired). Anyone willing to do this can just go ahead and give her a call!
