Neither Rain, Sleet, or Snow Stopped . . . the Easter Bunny from its Delivery This Year By Jeannie Wendell Ogden Valley News Staff Adverse weather did not deter about 400 Valley residents, young and old, from joining in the fun at Easter events held at the Eden Bowery this year. Prior to a successful Easter Egg Hunt, Chick and Stuart Barnes of Eden, along with Alan Clifford on guitar, performed an earth dance in honor of Earth Day, while playing follow the leader with colorful scarves and music. Each colored scarf represented an element of the Earth. “We wanted to plant a hope filled garden, basically a garden that came to life with music put together,” said Chick Barnes. Mrs. Barnes daughters, China & Gypsy, were instrumental dancers in the performance. Girls and boys participated despite the inclement weather. The preevent was sponsored by Cat Dances Rescue Farm. Stuart Barnes started the Easter Egg Hunt with a countdown promptly at 11:00 a.m., and then the kids were off. There were five different age groups of children competing for the goods, each picking the Eden Park clean of about 6,000 Easter eggs. Linda Gillespie said, “ The kids are just like vacuum cleaners. I could barely get back to the Bowery before the kids were right behind me.” It only took about one minute to clear all the eggs from the park. Everyone had fun and was very appreciative of the event. Many were already looking forward to next year’s Easter affair. The doubleelimination tournament gave many basketball maniacs the opportunity to play some “hard and fast” ball. Once again, the Montgomery/White/Jones team dominated the tournament, and took the win over the Booth/Pack team in the championship game (despite Mitch Montgomery “losing his shirt” and having to borrow “Big Larry’s “ to finish the game!). Gaye Hogge’s gymnastics teams and Andrea Storey’s cheerleading Coach Kirt Motta (left) keeps track of the scores, while TOURNAMENT cont. on Dr. Vern Iverson (right) watches the game. See more photos of the game on page 13. page 13 James Moroni Thomas, while helping to build the road through Ogden Canyon in 1859, saw the abundance of limestone, and so in 1865, he constructed the first kiln in Ogden Canyon. It was situated west of the Winslow Hotel, which was built some twenty years later, and across the road and river from James Devine’s home (1944). A little later he found a better deposit and built a kiln farther down the canyon about a block or so east of Billy Wilson’s sawmill. This was a double kiln built in an “L” shape—one kiln facing north and the other facing east. This double kiln eventually deteriorated by erosion and caved in. To increase production Mr. Thomas also built a larger kiln a short distance to the east. This kiln, also in a state of disrepair, is the one that is now being restored.. Everyone is invited to come and view the restoration process of the Limestone Kiln. Also see what artifacts are buried in the history of Ogden Canyon, and learn how these artifacts related to activities happening in Northern Utah. There will be a tour of the entire kiln site/mining areas with a brief history of the kilns in Ogden Canyon. The open house will run from noon to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2001. It is located two miles east of Ogden on the south side of the highway in Ogden Canyon. For more information, contact Teneal Jensen on the Ogden Ranger District at 801-625-5112.
