Portrait of George Washington One of Many Auction Items An oil original painting, by JR Johansen of Huntsville, of President George Washington will also be auctioned off at the 4th of July Auction. Regarding the painting, Johansen recorded the following, beginning in the spring of 2008: “Last night I had a dream wherein George Washington came to me through a door in a very large gothic style building. He was dressed in a blue suit that resembled some sort of uniform. It had a red collar with embroidered gold. His hat was the typical tri-corn worn by men of the day. We spent one-on-one time together while he told me of events involving the American Revolution and his call to become the first President of the United States. extremely humbled to be in his presence. It was as if he was really there and I was this insignificant citizen having a conversation with one of the greatest men of all time. “I awoke this morning and remembered the face well enough that when I thought about it I was immediately drawn to the face of my friend and neighbor Steve Songer. Steve is the approximate height and build of George Washington, and has a facial profile very similar to that of the death mask of George. “…. I saw Steve Songer today and told him of my dream a week or so ago. I told him that I wanted to do a portrait of him because I wanted to do a portrait of George Washington and he best resembled the man of my dream….” Later Johansen wrote: “I have subsequently found out that Martha Custis Washington was critical of the portraits of her husband done by all of the artists of the time. One artist in particular was Gilbert Stewart who painted literally hundreds of portraits of Washington. In her memoirs, Martha is quoted as saying, ‘Gilbert Stewart’s paintings never did catch the likeness of my George.’ “In studying the death mask and also his life mask, I can see why she said what she said. My dream took on greater significance and seemed to give me liberty to come up with my own George Washington. With the help of some friends, a 4th of July program, and a dream, I came up with the [the painting] “The Real George Washington” dressed in a gala uniform similar to the one he wore when attending ballroom dances with his Martha. One account of the event where he resigned his commission before congress describes him dressed as a citizen rather than in his military uniform. Martha describes his gala uniform as her choice of his apparel for him to wear. “Is it likely that he wore the gala uniform to resign his commission? I choose to think so. We rented the uniform, dressed him [Steve Songer] in it, and I painted this portrait of “The Real George Washington—Father of Our Country.” “It’s interesting to note that the final tally of the election where George Washington was elected President of the United States of America was taken and accounted for on April 6, 1789 at the age of 57. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized on April 6, 1830 (41 years later). Two-hundredand-nineteen years after his election, I had a dream of George Washington on April 6, 2008.” |
