Letters to the Editor Crockett Can’t Have it Both Ways The title of Dr. Crockett’s “A Responsibility to the Republic” of May 1 got my attention right off but after reading the good doctor’s commentary, I was left out in the dark. I would disagree that so much of our history is attributed to a Creator, God, the Almighty, or Divine Providence. He can’t have it both ways—either God had a hand in our history or He didn’t and our history, both good and bad, is the result of man’s doing. By the title of the commentary, I wanted to know whose responsibility was being discussed here. My basis for our country is that there is inherent good in man and that good, not solely based on any god or religion, is what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they designed the Constitution. That document, of course, very deliberately and purposely, left out religion from our functioning government. The Founders thought this only an individual obligation with universal appeal and, if applicable, on a general basis to apply to everyone. Only then would it meet the standard of being applicable to all citizens. Since Crockett didn’t mention those shortcomings or failures, I throw out a few—slavery, women, Native Americans, immigrants, and our own internment camps of the early 40s. There are many other examples but if you’re going to give credit for the positive things about our country to a divine being, you must also share the “responsibility” for the not-sopositive things about our country to that same divine being. I fully agree that many of us have not learned the great lessons and are not as appreciative of what we have in this great nation. I hope we learn those lessons and become more appreciative—sooner rather than later. JH Thompson (John), Ogden Valley Elementary Says Thank You! We at Valley Elementary wish to express sincere gratitude to everyone who contributed to our Fall Fundraiser last September. The fundraiser was a huge success as you supported our students in the “Fun Run!” We have just recently completed two major projects that came as a result of your generous contributions. First, the addition of six new safety cameras that allow us to keep a safe watch on our “Bulldogs” while they are at school! Second, the addition of an amazing new “ball wall” on our back playground. The students can now bounce balls off a wall to their hearts’ content! They will love it! Additionally, funding from the fundraiser has contributed to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) module materials, educational iPad apps, small-group reading materials, new media for the library, mathematical educational software, keyboarding licenses, assemblies, new Chromebooks, and more! Please know how much the faculty and staff at Valley Elementary respect and honor our great community. Thank you for your kindness and generosity! Sincerely, Dave Hales – Principal Kraig Hansen- PTO President Valley Faculty and Staff Pictured above is the new ball wall at Valley Elementary. |
