Show Volume XXIV Issue IX The Ogden Valley news Page 11 May 15, 2017 MOCK DISASTER cont. from page 9 were successfully reported and relayed to the Weber County CERT incident command site. However, several of the “red/yellow,” or more serious simulated crises scenarios, were handled on site by block captains responsible for the area where each crisis occurred. “There were many examples of good on-site problem solving,” according to coordinator Sharon Beckert of Eden. On the whole, radio traffic was orderly and disciplined and properly coordinated. The participating team has been practicing radio communication through weekly call-ins to the Wolf Creek command site to familiarize themselves with using the hand-held radios and radio protocol. As the simulation progressed, radio traffic became even more precise and exacting. The Wolf Creek area OVERT team has been working on the emergency situation protocol for several months in conjunction with Beckert and co-coordinator Susan Lowther. Shawn Tuttle, also of Eden, organized and rolled out the radio protocol for use by block OVERT captains. The exercise was overseen by coordinators Beckert and Lowther, who were asked to develop a model that, once refined, will be rolled out throughout Ogden Valley. Summit Powder Mountain is pleased to announce that it is an official sponsor of the Junior League of Ogden. Summit Powder Mountain chose to partner with the Junior League, after careful consideration, due to the league’s understanding and stewardship of civic duty in the community, Summit representatives stated. According to a press release submitted by Amanda Ballenger, Community Relations Director for Summit Powder Mountain, “the partnership is the latest example of Summit Powder Mountain’s community relations efforts.” “We’re thrilled to support the Junior League of Ogden, which is comprised of an exceptional group of women committed to making Ogden a better place to live,” Ballenger added. “Having lived in Ogden for nearly a decade, I’ve seen that there are so many worthy opportunities for us to participate in, and while it’s tough to have to pick and choose, we picked the Junior League because they are forward-thinking and seize the opportunities where they can have the most impact to help. Since purchasing Powder Mountain, we’ve been involved in a number of community relations efforts, and we’ll be building upon this work to roll out many more partnerships in the coming months to continue being an active partner and participant in the community.” The partnership kicked off with the women of Summit Powder Mountain attending “A Night in White at the Cape,” the Junior League’s Annual Gala, which took place Friday, April 7. At the dinner, the Junior League announced its plans to raise awareness around the issue of human trafficking in 2017. “The Junior League of Ogden is proud to be sponsored by Summit Powder Mountain and their passion for working on the community to improve it in meaningful ways,” said Jaynee Nadolski, Junior League of Ogden President. “The Junior League of Ogden believes that our ultimate product is the women we train to go out into the world and make a difference, and we are excited that Summit Powder Mountain shares this vision. As we embark on our AntiHuman Trafficking campaign, partnerships such as this will help us provide education and extend our message into different areas of the community.” As a sponsor of the Junior League, Summit Powder Mountain will participate in volunteer events hosted and coordinated by Junior League of Ogden volunteers, have a plot at the Oasis Community Garden, which targets issues of food equity through education and access by helping individuals plant, grow, harvest, and prepare healthy food; receive two complimentary memberships to the Junior League; and have a booth at the Oasis Summer Nights, which features live music and dancing in the courtyard, free yoga sessions, and local artists and entrepreneurs selling goods. According to Ballenger, the partnership is one of many initiatives that Summit at Powder Mountain is spearheading in the community. “Since purchasing Powder Mountain in 2013, Summit Powder Mountain has volunteered and contributed to the WayPoint Academy in Huntsville, a school that provides specialized treatment for young men between the ages of 13 and 18 who are afflicted with various types of anxiety, bringing artists in residency such as the renowned spoken word poet INQ to inspire its students. It has also hosted a number dinners and presentations, including from the world class mountain biker Rebecca Rusch; and hosted concerts, lectures, film screenings, art exhibitions, participatory art from artists like Simon Beck; and fundraised for local nonprofits. Summit Powder Mountain has also built out its Summit Institute facilities, opening them for free non-profit and community use over the years, including the Summit Institute Skylodge (opened in 2014) and the Summit Institute Bower Lodge (opened 2017).
