Our summer recreation program for youth ages 8 to 12 years old combines outdoor activities with swimming events and fieldtrips. Each week, youth participate in a wide variety of activities such as swimming at North Ogden’s North Shore Aquatic Center, going to Classic Water slides, riding FrontRunner to Salt Lake City, visiting the Museum of Natural History, and also enjoying cookies at the Gateway outdoor mall. Our out- door adventures also include weekly hikes in Ogden and Ogden Valley, canoeing on Causey and Pineview reservoirs, and much, much more. Huntsville Patriotic Speech Contest Announced Wishing to encourage and increase appreciation for our constitutionally guaranteed freedoms, the Huntsville 4th of July committee wishes to announce this year’s Patriotic Speech Contest. This year’s theme is “Our Freedoms—The Gift of Heroes.” Prizes to be awarded to winning speeches include $150 for first-place, $100 for second-place, and $75 for third-place. Speeches should be limited to 3½ minutes in length when presented orally. Entrants must range in age from 15 to 19 years of age, and reside within the Huntsville area (Must live in an area with the Huntsville zip code of 84317). Speeches will be presented to judges on June 30 at 10:00 a.m. at the Huntsville Town Hall. Prizes will be awarded, and the winning speeches will be presented during the Huntsville July 4th Patriotic Program held at the Huntsville Park stage. Chipped Wood Available in Huntsville Chipped wood is now available at the Huntsville Town Green waste facility. The facility is open Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., and Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A loading tractor will be available throughout the summer. One of the most pristine marathons that Utah has to offer, this course starts in the Monte Cristo area and ends at Huntsville Town Park during the peak of our vibrant autumn colors. This course offers a gentle decline in elevation of 3,500 feet from start to finish, and will be a USATC certified and Boston qualifying course. Start preparing now for the Huntsville Marathon. The Kentucky Derby Celebrated The Ogden Music Festival—A family event you won’t want to miss! The 5th Annual Ogden Music Festival will be held June 1- 3, 2012 at Ogden’s beautiful Fort Buenaventura. The festival is presented by the Ogden Friends of Acoustic Music (OFOAM). This year’s festival lineup features outstanding performers from the world of Americana music including bluegrass, blues, and indie-folk genres. Texas singer-songwriter Robert Earl Keen is the Saturday night headliner, Grammy nominated Claire Lynch Band and Junior Sisk & Rambler’s Choice are bluegrass headliners. Elephant Revival, a neo-acoustic band rising in popularity will perform a free outreach concert in addition to main stage performances. Blues band Swamp Cabbage will be Friday night’s headliner. Camping is available right on site in the lush, natural environment of historical Fort Buenaventura. Utah State Instrument Championships: The Ogden Music Festival will present the Utah State Instrument Championships (USIC) with open and novice divisions in flat-pick guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, and finger-style guitar (open division only). Winners are eligible to perform at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, KA. The competitions can be viewed free to the public.
