Show 111NTAH BASIN STANDARD. Mav 5. 1998- - Pace 21 Not just any old pig; Ask A Specialist How can I help my child get its Petunia the pig By Sarah Colton who want Petunia to stick around. Petunia and the familys two dogs, Osceola, a hunting dog, and Lily, a golden lab, love to play with each other. Osceola runs around Petunia barking and occasionally nipping. Lily just smells her, still not quite sure what to do. Petunia doesn't let anything bother her. She knows who is bigger. She likes to tease Osceola because the dog is still scared, so she starts chasing her and the dog runs to the house for safety. Sometimes while Charlie is feed' ing Petunia they talk to each other. Charlie says he makes either a really low pitched sound or a high squeak and the pig squeals back in reply at the same pitch. We were going to kill the pig but everybody juat grew too attached, says Charlie. Luckily mom and dad dont seem to mind having the pig around. I think it is cool to have a pet if that is what the kida want, i pijj Mrs. Chapoose. Petunia, being the smart pig she is, figured out how to get out of the gate. As soon as the family left ahe would remember where Charlie had let her out before, go there and push on the gate till it was open enough for her to squeeze through. A neighbor sawthe pig running around with the dogs one day and worried the Twoyeara ago Charlie Chapooaes old Ciana, wanted little sister him to catch a pig at the UBIC greaaed pig chaae. He got close enough to get aome ofthe grease on his fingers but he couldnt .uiteget a firm grip on the slimy thing. Ciana cried when she found out her family would not be getting a pig that year. old Charlie didn't But forget his sisters wish. A year later at die greased pig chase on the soft-ba- ll field at the Roosevelt Park, Charlie and his brother Curtis were in hot pursuit of a fast running pink 18-ye-ar piglet Charlie caught that little pink pig, but the pig isn't little any more. Over the past ten months the pig must have pigged out and now is a n sow affectionately called full-grow- Petunia - named after Porky Pigs girlfriend. You can bet Petunia wont wind up on anyones breakfast plate. It wasnt planned this way, but shes now a member ofthe family. Every now and then Charlie takes Petunia for walks to give her the proper exercise. While she is taking her walk she nibbles on the weeds and wanders to the creek near the Chapoose home in Whiterocks, while she stops to smell everything along the way. I would knpw. As soon as I arrived Petunia sauntered over and put her slimy nose on my leg to check me out. I touched her back to push her away and pulled away fast Her akin was hard and rough and all the moistened hair on her made it feel slimy. I guess Im not used to touching pigs. Its not just the Chapoose kids pet pig could get hurt, called Charlie's dad, Bobby, at work. If Petunia tries to get out again she might have a difficult time, the gate is now nailed shut So far the only drawback to hav-ing a pig for a pet comes at feeding time. 1 don't like to feed it, says Curtis Chapoose. He says he cant stand the smell. 1 i the most from organized sports own Answer by: Tom Lee, Utah State on becoming better than their Comparisons performance. past Extension and Family University with others can be risky and disHuman Development Specialist couraging, since someone will alshould be Most children ere not going to ways be better.
