A riding accident involving, two West Valley people, one hone, one cattle guard, and several Neola residents ended in tears and cheers one Sunday afternoon. Cathy Carter had traveled to the Uintah Basin with her boyfriend Vic Middleton for a bit of leisure, including horse back riding. Sunday, April 26, was cool and overcast when the couple saddled up for an afternoon ride in Neola. They had just begun their journey when Rice, the horse that Cathy was riding was startled and panicked. The frightened steed then backed into a cattle guard. Cathy was able to jump free as Rice went down, but the terrified animal thrashed in the bars until all four ofits legs were down inside the three foot deep guard. The couple worked to calm Rice down and free the animal, but the design of the cattle guard made it impossible for his legs to come free. Cathy then ran to the home of the closest neighbor - the McQuivey reel- - Dr. Mark Dennis DVM was called to treat the injured animal. According to Cathy, Dennis administered a mild sedative, while Horrocks, and. several neighbors continued to work to cut away the guard, all the while protecting the horse from sparks J. Westfall Jordan Westfall, age 2, died May 2, 1998 from an accidental drowning. He was a son of Sariah Camer and Jessie Westfall. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 6 at 1 p.m. at the Neola LDS Ward Chapel. Friends may call at the Hullinger Olpin Mortuary Tuesday from 9 p.m. and Wednesday 1 hour priortothe service at the church. A full obituary will be in next weeks paper. 7-- Blain Horrocks, the owner ofthe cattle guard was contacted and came with a torch to cut through the steel to make room for the horse to stand a little earner and allow his hooves to be free of the guard. A blanket was brought from a neighboring house to cover the horse to help prevent shock, and rain slickers were brought out to Cathy and Vic, as a storm broke over head. and flames. Dennis then determined that the horse be rendered unconscious so he could be removed without additional damage to his legs. After the animal was knocked out a network of men, muscle and good rope work pulled the 1,500 pound hone free of the grate-.T! 1 Cathy said Dennis thaaendeq to Rices wounds, stitching one front leg and treating the others for scrapes and sores. When he became conscious Rice was allowed to stand. "You can imagine our astonishment and gratitude that these won-- derfiil people would go out of their way, not only with time, but with effort and equipment, to assist someone in need," Cathy expressed. Rice was transported by horse trailer back to his West Valley home with his friend Chex, and is stiff and sore, but on the mend, Cathy says, who is relieved that her worst fear, ' that he broke a leg," did not come true. - n mm i Corner CorraI annmg Bed SunSta Sk mmm ' ; ' When Am buy A System, Subscribe To DIRECTV And Call To Activate USSR ULS. ?
