Show Pace 14 - May 5. 1998 : Education Uintah Basin Standard Sorensen to retire after 30 years teaching at UBATC After 30 years of teaching at the Uintah Basin Applied Technology Center, Garth Sorensen will be retiring at the conclusion ofthis school year. All former staff members, students, family and friends are invited to an Open House in his honor to be held May 12 from 6 p.m. in the 4-- UBATC Board room. Garth was bom and raised in Scipio, Utah where his family owned and operated a farm, General Mer- cantile store, hotel, tourist cabins and service station. He attended Snow College where he was active in football and drama, served as freshman class president and was voted friendliest man on campus. Garth served an LDS Mission to Denmark in 1958-6He graduated from USU with a BS degree inAuto-DiesEngineering in 1968. He moved to Roosevelt in 1968 to teach at the Uintah Basin Area Vocational Center, which is now the math building at Union High School. He was involved in the pilot program for student p those , first years ofteaching. Garth served as interim director of the UBATC for one year. He has been advisor of VICA for approximately 15 years of his career. Garth recently completed his Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications and was el co-o- responsible for UBATC curriculum, facilities and equipment meeting the ASE standards of quality for automotive technical training. Some of Garths other accomplishments include owning and operating Chevron Service Station in Roosevelt for three years, serving on Roosevelt City Council for 6years, serving as a member of the Roosevelt East Stake Presidency for 10 years as well as holding other various church positions. He was awarded the Farmer Rancher of the Year for Uintah Basin Conservation in 1989 and attended two Congressional hearings in Washington D.C. as a spokesperson for the Salinity Program, representing the Soil Conservation Service and Water Users of Uintah Basin. Garth is married to the former Deanne Adams. They are the parents of three daughters, Charlotte (David) Gillman, Janice (Kelly) Bird, and Merikay (Marshall) Bellon. start coming... .Im out of here! RJHS presents the melodrama Tied to the Tracks The Roosevelt Junior High ' Garth is planning to continue with his farm work and enjoy his 8 grandchildren. He is quoted as saying, Im reminded of how long I've taught when children of my former students start attending my classes, but when their grandchildren School Music Productions class has been working hard on a melodrama entitled, Tied to the Tracks. It is a delightful, two-aplay that has all the characters typical ofa melodrama, including the heroine, Dakota Melody, played by Teresa Grant; the female vixen outlaw, Wild Prairie Rose, played by Cristy Reynolds; the Villan, Professor Silias Scavenger, played by Colton Elder, and of course Hie hero, SheriffBilly, played by Derek Lemon. Other cast members indudeNick ct Ainsworth, Alaina Dixon, Joelann Eldredge, Christy Gilbert, Eric Hansen, Steven Harmston, Sabrina Lazano, Doug Moore, Shantel Phillips, Lyndsey Serawop, Jay Underwood, Adam Young and Janeen Nelsen. Home Education Association The United State Achievement Society has named Kade Betts, son of Ed and Wendy Betts, as a United States National Award Winner in Honor Rol . Kade attends Roosevelt Jr. High and was nominated by Lena Pure, a counselor at the school. His grandparents are Jr. and Carol Betts of Roosevelt and DeVoy and Ila Willden of Aurora Utah. 1 The United States Achievement Academy announced today that The Home Education Association will hold its next support group meeting Thursday, May 7 at 7 p.m. in theMoonlake Electric Building. Courtney Suzanne Walker, daughter of Brent and Jesse Walker from Mt. Home has been named an Scholar. Courtney who attends Altamont High was nominated by Brent Brotherxon. She will Scholar appear in the Yearbook. Grandparents are, Gary and Rosalee Jessen of Altonah; and Ida Walker, Mt. Home.
