A world renown photographer is using his skills in the Basin to photograph several of the local members of our community recently. One Roosevelt family that was photographed, before the men had to move on to Whiterocks, said they were very friendly and interesting people. Another Rothstein Project The OHI and Roghstein are going to work together on another project in the near future. Although the Institute wants to be concerned with the Mountain West, Institute Director Leslie Helen has a national project in 1 exhibition become an audio-visuentitled "Working Together: A Utah Portfolio. The photos he The OIII project has been in progress for a couple of years and is their first project, according to John McCormick, Chairman of the Board for the Institute. These histories show the last fifty or Bixly years of the ethnic communities past. The .follow up project, the photographs, will document people and places within the eight groups, he said. He hopes to have a large of several hundred collection photos and thousands of negatives to "parallel and supplement the oral histories for a traveling exhibition that will go throughout the state. took of the refugees in the Hongkew ghetto were misplaced in the UN archives until recently. An interesting coincidence WHITE- - ROCKS NEWS Virgina Ferguson Bob and Betty King enjoyed a visit over last weekend with Betty's sister, Karen Reyes, and three of her children, Nathan 14, Dion 12, and Angelica 5, of Ephriam. e Norval and Fay Kitchen, of Orem, drove to Whiterocks, intending to make an overnight visit with their daughter, LaRae Moosman, and her family. However, when they arrived here, they received a call from their daughter, Norma Brookes, that Myrtle Kitchen, age 90, LaRaes grandmother, had been taken to the hospital with blood clots in her leg, bo the Kitchens returned home immediately. At this writing, Grandma Kitchen is resting well, and. recovering. Although the Basin wasnt the locality chosen for the Rothstein photosessions, they ranged from Tremonton to Monticello and Carbon County to Cache County; the selection wasn't just arbitrarily chosen. Rothstein was retracing his steps of the 1930s in the State. During the 30's Rothstein worked with the Farm Security Administration project. Some of his photos have become classic pieces used to exemplify the time and plight of the fanner. Then he worked as director of photography for Look and Parade Magazines, and in World War II only cams to light, as part of the Institutes recording oral histories of Jews in the Salt Lake area, when several of the Rh.ng.1 families settled in Salt Lake City. With the over one thnund names of other Shangi Jews that have settled on the East and West Coasts the OHI and Rothstein will have an ample supply of material for their other project. Kelen said he feels ' oral interviews enable us to better understand the present, either of Utah as in the case of the Utah Portfolio, or of the national ethnic character as in the Shangai Jews project. For example, he said - the interviews, which are a two way process (for it takes a person that is willing to talk as well as one willing to ask questions), show the ethnic culture of the Basin are attempting to balance the past and the present They try to honor the past and be faithful to the traditional life and still be in the twentieth century, Kelen said. Of the thirty interviews dona in the Basin, of both mixed blood and Ute Tribe members, he said that is only one of the threads he has detected in the interviews. Perhaps this thread, can enable ua all to better understand all of our present. : . Floyd and Zelma Deeta, of Eager, AZ spent two days last week with Stan and Mary Lynne Hoopes.
