(Alberta Government Photo) Spells Adventure in Canada T-A RADISHES A gdu. onions Its spring again. Vacation time is not far away. Come adventuring in Alberta! Whether you are a sportsman or a sightseer, Alberta means in the majestic Canadian Rockies, the mystical Red adventure Deer Valley Badlands and even along the miles of excellent highways. Discover picturesque lakes for delightful fishing; thrill to the shops and gaiety of the bustling cities; join in the excitement of the colorful events. THERE IS MORE, too. If you want to get lost" for a while and not suffer too much inconvenience in the process, come and relax where the quiet is so deep you can almost hear it. Drive up the Forestry Trunk Road System starting west of Pincher Creek, on Highway No. 3, and travel north for 600 miles. Constructed originally as quick access to the deep forest in case of fire, this route has become increasingly popular with residents and visitors alike. The roads are gravelled and constantly " maintained, the grades are excellent and the scenery magnificent. Although the actual System does not start until you arrive at Cole- - ' man, the municipal roads west of Pincher Creek through such in- -' teresting spots as Beaver Mines and Lees Lake make a definite contrilmtion to the trip. is The link was the first of the three sections of the Forestry Trunk Road System to be built by the provincial government. During the past few yean many oil companies, actively working in the area, have opened side roads into previously inaccessible beauty spots. You may now travel a road that has been constructed right to the top of Plateau Mountain, and from an altitude of 8,725 feet above sea level the panorama of the surroundmiles further north ing country is absolutely fabulous. Fifty-fiv- e the Highway PaA, at an elevation of 7,260 feet, is the highest pass over which a road has been constructed in Canada. THE KANANASKIS LAKES; as well as the streams along the way, furnish fisherman with exciting sport, and every year greater niinilrers of visitors come with boats and equipment. The area is an excellent one for the big game hunter and more and more parties base their safaris at the campsites. Campgrounds in the area are frequent and conveniently placed for overnight, vacation or base camp use. The second link jn the chain starts at Cochrane on No. 1A, west of Calgary, and joins Highway No. 16 west at Hinton. The topography of the second section is quite different to that of the southern area, changing from rocky mountains and heavily wooden evergreen forests to the beauty of rolling parkland and foothills with dense deciduous timlier stands. One of the most intriguing waterfalls in Allrerta is just off this road about 100 feet. The rushing waters of the Ram River tumble over a precipice 45 feet high, wander in not too much of a hurry for a distance of some 20 feet, and then plunge another 30 feet into the gorge below. From the old townsite of Nordegg it is possible to go for a few miles down the future David Thompson Highway along the route followed by that fantastic mapmaker of the early days. Much of the terrific upheaval that took place millions of years ago when the Rocky Mountains were thmst up is evident here, in the twisted strata and grotesque position of the mountain peaks. The road Icefield Highway, alis not yet open as far as the Banff-Jaspown risk have made their at travellers though many adventurous is well worth the trip. To the more cautious the short double-bac- k the time. It is expected that this important junction with the Banff-JaspIcefield Highway will Ire open for travel in 1968. NORDEGG TO ROBB is ghost country. When Oil toppled Coal from its thrown as King of Fuels the miners from Foothills, Luscar, Cadomin and all the other coal centres in the area packed their goods and left. Only empty houses and the stark stacks of silent tipples remain to tell visitors that once it was a hustling prosperous area. But the ghosts are being pushed back. The little community of Robb is the centre of a growing fishing and hunting holiday region. For the streams are a delight to fishemfcn, containing . trout, grayling and pike. Big game hunting, too, is rewarding, with many fine trophy heads being olitained often. Camping areas are, as elsewhere along the road, frequent and well placed. ' The section of the Forestry Trunk Road System north of Hinton is the newest link. Again the topography differs from the two sections further south. This is muskeg land and animals such as moose, are seen, standing so still it is almost impossible to dis- cem them against the heavy foliage. The campground at Grande Cache has the reputation of lieing in the most heautiful setting in the province. During the autumn upland bird and waterfowl hunting is plentiful in the area south of Goodwin. in fact ALALBERTA DOES SPELL ADVENTURE - "V 4 :gr:.';vyt, (t -- Coleinan-Kananask- pipits Value eg. 89c umi o trolls llbby, Pimcpplft Grapefruit H o D.DBBV ffKBSD 44 Ox.
