Parents can help children realize that rules are to help them live comfortably with others and to have greater freedom in choosing a happy life. But many parents ask "how" do I do that. Some suggestions I have to this question is to let the children se6 immediate consequences for their behavior. Parents can easily set up charts of basic expectations for the child: dressing self in morning, washing dishes, etc. A check or by Linda Merchant Social Worker I can't just let Tommy run out in the street, so I spank him when it Mona Rae Brady happens. Giving the child a choice is another way of teaching him he can be responsible and also give him confidence in making decisions. When a child feels trapped or that his parents do everything and always tell him what to do, the child may feel the only choices he ever has is to conform or to misbehave neither teaches the child that responsibility is a good thing. The sooner parents can trust the child and be proud of the child because he does acceptable things on his own, the easier it will be for the child to accept responsibility as an expression of himself instead of the parent's wishes. If parents set limits prior to problems, set consequences prior to behavior and give the child a chance to gain control without physical abuse or threat or losing, the love of the parent discipline can run smoother with much more meaning for the child and parent wing he will be protected against others hurting him or his feelings of wanting to .hurt others. A child needs help in learning to express his feelings appropriately. A way of protecting the child when he does lose control and also a protection to the parent when irritation is rising, is to place a child in isolation. Isolation in a home can be called "out of bounds" or "time out." The child understands he will remain in isolation until he has gained control again - usually this never exceeds five minutes and generally only takes a minute or two when the child is out of the stimulating situation. A corner of the child's room can be sectioned off for such a purpose. Dark closets or basements are completely unsuitable to help the child gain control without becoming extremely frightened.
