Coordinating all of the classes, meeting USU professors on planes and making sure classrooms and equipment are set up keeps Benchs day far from dull. In the course of a day I find myself being everything from a mechanic to a counselor and from a nurse to an administrator," noted the UBEC director. The job is complicated also by the fact many of the classes are held one week in Roosevelt and the next week in Vernal. That way one group of students isnt stuck with doing all the driving, explained Bench. And on days when he is driving from the Roosevelt center into Vernal to meet a plane or take care of some other detail, he loads up a big van with students going his direction. Dr. Bench is quite enthusiastic about bringing down top professors from the "I consider it one of the most unique programs in America - a college without buildings and with classes held in two different cities," said Varnell Bench, director of the Utah State University Uintah Basin Education Center. The program, which has recently doubled its enrollment, is made possible by s' fleet of cars, airplanes, large briefcases and the use of classrooms in about 10 public schools in Vernal and Roosevelt. It is Dr. Benchs goal to provide the same solid academic curriculum for his students that is available from any major university. This quarter 62 classes were offered from the eight USU academic colleges, ranging from anatomy an dphysiology of animals to education of exceptional children. . Enrollment is about 400 students taking anywhere from one class to a full college load. "It figures out to about 130 FTE (full time equivalent) students, Logan, he doesn't give up. Take for example the case of getting Ralph Matesky, director of atring music at USU, to teach a community orchestra class this quarter. Prof. Matesky expressed reluctance and finally told me he couldn't do it because the plane for Roosevelt left at 3 p.m. and he couldn't get free from his campus duties until 7 p.m.," related Dr. Bench. No problem. I just arranged for a flight to leave Logan at 7 p.m. and to land in Vernal in time for an 8 p.m. class. How could Matesky say no then? He couldn't! And you should hear how fantastic the violins are beginning to sound because he knows exactly what to tell the players, Bench added. Accompanying Matesky on the flight is Irving Wassermann who teaches a master class in piano. The UBEC director and his staff start each day off with a morning check to see what details need to be taken care of for , the evening classes. Arrangements are made at this time to provide transportation to And from the two airports, and transportation for the individual profes- university to supplement the four resident professors in providing curriculum. In the drama area, the center has put on such plays as Charley's Aunt and Fantas ticks, and latter being taken all over the basin for performances. It was a money maker too, noted Bench. Currently, our primary focus has been on getting students working on a degree program. With this emphasis, we try to plan what courses a student will need and then provide them. In some instances we have loaded students into a van and taken them to Logan for advisor counseling, he stated. Bench feels a breakthrough is coming the center in the way of student graduations, noting that some of the center students will be in the procession at USU this commencement. How can we lose? We offer a quality program and the community is becoming aware of that fact," he concluded. for To meet all your insurance needs. Check with: John D. GqlOf Ins. In an effort to overcome this problem the Fire Chief has implemented a procedure for city residents who wish to burn weeds or tree and shrub clippings. City residents who wish to burn such items should call the Police Department and request a burning permit. An officer will be sent to check and see if the burn will be safe. The officer will then fill out the burning permit and the person requesting the permit will need to sign it. The following rules will apply to persons wishing a burning permit. 1. Only weeds, shrub and tree clippings or similar matter may be burned. No paper or garbage. 2. Burning should be done before 10 a.m. 3.
