Reported 1993, issue in the September, of the journal, "Epidemiology," the research was conducted from 1989-199- 1 by J. Lyon, M.D., professor of family and preventive medicine in the Division of Lynn EpidcmiologyBiostatisticsPreventi on and seven Research, collaborators who, at the time of the study, were master's of public health students andor medical residents at the Utah medical school. Lead author on the paper, "The Effect of Age at Smoking Initiation on Lung Cancer Risk," is Kurt T. Hegmann, M.D., now with the Department of Preventive Medicine, Medical College of Wisconsin at Madison. "Our study concluded that up to 52.4 percent of lung cancer cases in men and up to 73 percent of cases in women can be attributed to the effect of early age at first smoking, of the independent amount smoked," Lyon said. "The public policy implications of our investigation are obvious and compelling," Lyon emphasized. "We need a government mandate-issu- ed at the federal rather than the state level to ensure uniformity and compliance across the nation-- to enforce as stringent a policy with cigarettes as we now do with alcoholic beverages." The Utah team investigated 282 cases of lung cancer (182 in men and 100 in women) diagnosed period in during the three-yeyears of age and patients 40-7- 9 confined by the Utah Cancer cancer Registry, a population-base- d registry established in 1966. The study also included 3,282 controls--som- e smokers and some not identified either through randomor the digit dialing (ages 40-6ar 4) U.S. Health Care Financing ). Administration (ages Interviewers telephoned the cases (or nearest surviving relative) and controls to collect demographic data and a lifetime smoking history. The history included the age at which the person started smoking, 65-79- average number of cigarettes smoked per day and, if applicable, age at which smoking ceased. Cumulative exposure to cigarettes was defined by packs of cigarettes smoked daily and added up as a total number of packs over a lifetime (pack-years- ). "After controlling for age, sex and amount of tobacco exposure, we found that men who started smoking before age 20 had a higher risk of lung substantially developing cancer--approximate- Charlotte Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints.
