A3 Car thieves stopped with broom By MARK EDDINGTON Staff Writer A broom CENTERVILLE proved to be the last straw in a series of miscalculations on the part of two alleged auto thiefs, who were cornered by police and arrested Friday in a Woods Cross trailer park. Centerville Det. Von Steenblik said the male teens, ages 14 and 15, used a hacksaw to break into a gate and steal a 1993 Cadillac Seville from a service bay at Harmons Cadillac in Provo. They were running away to Idaho to be with a friend. They got as far as Centerville when the electronic speedometer went out, and they pulled off the interstate. They wanted to find a quiet place where they could take a look at the speedometer and not be noticed, said Steenblik. That place turned out to be the Y parking lot behind the Centerville Police Department. One teen was under the dash working on the speedometer while the other was examining a rifle the owner had left in the trunk when Officer Chris Symes walked out the door about 2 a.m. When the officer saw the juveniles, they jumped in the car and started to back out. Symes yelled for them to stop. But they took off and almost hit him as they peeled out of the parking lot, the detective added. Symes gave chase, following the Cadillac on southbound The teens exited the interstate and tried to elude pursuit by entering a Woods Cross trailer park near 975 West. There were two entrances into the park but no back entrance, and the juveniles were cornered. Bountiful, Farmington and Woods Cross officers assisted Symes in sealing off both avenues of escape. One of the residents heard the commotion, came out and found this kid hiding on his porch. He told him not to move or he was going to shoot him with the gun he was holding at his back, Steenblik said. Officers hearing the man screaming and yelling, hurried over to the trailer. They were amused to find the weapon being used to detain the teen was a broom handle. Police booked the suspects into the Moweda Youth Detention Facility in Roy for felony evading. Provo police are expected to charge the pair with auto theft, theft of a firearm and burglary. The Bountiful LDS Temple got its crowning glory Monday afternoon when the statue of the Angel Moroni was placed atop the structure. Mormons believe the Angel Moroni delivered the Golden Plates which were translated to become the Book of Mormon to the church founder and first prophet Joseph Smith. The Angel Moroni In Bountiful is a replica of the Angel Moroni on the Salt Lake Temple and other LDS temples throughout the world. The Bountiful Angel Moroni was placed without a ceremony. The entire process took less than 10 minutes but a large crowd gathered to witness the event. "It was thrilling to see the angel hoisted into the air to take it's rightful place on top of the temple, said one local resident. The temple is scheduled for completion in the fall of 1994.
