Show B2 DAVIS COUNTY CLIPPER Tuesday, October 19, 1993 Wildcats edge Bulldogs, By GEOFF GRIFFIN Sports Writer - SALT LAKE CITY Woods Cross beat Judge Memorial 10-- 8 Friday night to become the only team in Utah to beat a Catholic school last weekend. (A certain school in Proxo failed in a similar attempt.) The Bulldog gridiron, which should be renamed Rush Limbaugh field, (its soft in the middle and slants to the right) was a huge mud puddle, more brown than green. By the end of the game it was impossible to tell who was wearing what uniform number. Judge coach John Colosimo Pace had 126 yards on 22 carries. Both offenses seemed to do everything but score. Judge fumbled on its very first play, giving Woods Cross the ball at the Bulldog 39. This helped to set up a 27 yard field goal by Rich Lane. Early in the second quarter Jesse Malmrose intercepted a Bulldog pass while playing safety. However, he went from the sublime to the ridiculous in one play when he fumbled away a wet ball on the very next play when he took the snap as the Wildcat quarterback. This gave Judge the ball at the Woods Cross 45 and a few plays later halfback Anthony Jeffries broke loose for yard recognized going in that it would touchdown run. Fullback a 19 6-- end-overe- ut 10-- 8 Donald Trimming took the ball in two plays later and Lane hit the PAT to gic the Wildcats a four point lead with 3:25 left to play. Judge did drive the ball to the Wildcat 32 and faced third and one with 1:57 left. Cat linebacker Howard Teo rose to the occasion and stuffed Jeffries for a tw'o yard loss in the backfield. Judge then couldn't complete the fourth dow n pass and Woods Cross began trying to run out the last 1:45. It proved to be a difficult task. Judge used its last two time-out- s and there were still 43 seconds left when Woods Cross faced fourth down on their own twenty. It was here that coach Haning showed he's not afraid to make a gutsy decision and purposely took a safely. On the one hand it allowed the Wildcats to kickoff unhindered. On the other, it would make the score 10-- 8 and put the Bulldogs within range to win the game w'ith a field goal. Haning called two straight timeouts and walked out on the field and showed his team how to line up for a play they had never practiced before. The snap went to Malmrose lined up in the punter's spot and he ran straight out the back of the end zone. Haning did not want him to try to run around to take time off MUD SLIDE: Despite muddy conditions, Woods Cross escaped with a crystal clear victory at Judge Memorial Friday night.
