With the wins, both teams captured berths in the state 4A tournament, which will be held today through May 30 at Woods Cross High School. The state tournament is true double elimination. In the final round of Region soccer action last Tuesday, the Clearfield-Ro- y and games both ended in 2 ties, while Layton blanked Box hard-foug- We ht 4-- inter-regio- 1 Weber-Bonne-vil- le 2-- Elder. Meanwhile on Tuesday, Highland dropped Davis in a Region 4 contest. In Region 4, Davis edged Viewmont to keep the Darts playoff hopes alive. Davis, Viewmont and Woods Cross are all tied at 5 in league play and were scheduled to play off yesterday for the third and fourth playoff spots from the region. In Tuesdays action, Roy High clinched its first Region 1 baseball championship since 1977 by clipping Clearfield. Roy 7, Layton 3 At Layton, the league champion Royals kept their perfect league slate intact and ruined the Lancers chance to move into a tie with Bonneville for third place in Region 1. The loss leaves the Lakers in third place in the final Region standings at 5 and 10-- 6 on the 2-- 4--12 1 5-- season. Davis 2, Viewmont At Bountiful, Paul Warden threw a to lead the Darts past the Vikings and into a three-wa- y tie for third place in Region 4. Davis is tied with Viewmont and Woods Cross at forcing a playoff early next week. In addition to only yielding two hits, Warden struck out four and walked one. The Darts picked up two runs in the fifth inning runs on an errant throw and an RBI single by Matt Bourgeois. We played well defensively, but I would have liked to see us See Baseball, page 2C two-hitt- er 5-- 5, Davis captures ; soccer crown The Davis High girls soccer team put their backs to the wind and came from a 1 deficit to claim a 3 win over Weber and the championship of the American Youth Soccer Organization state tournament This is the first year the Davis High team has won the state high school girls title, which must be played under the direction of the AYSO because girls soccer is not sanctioned by the Utah High School Activities Association. Davis defeated Weber 3 Frin day in the tournament to capture the title. The Darts beat Weber 3 the day before to give both teams one loss, forcing the championship 2-- 5-- 5-- double-eliminatio- 4-- game. Earlier last week Weber beat Davis 0 to send them into the 3-- losers bracket. In the game, wind was an early factor. Davis did stay even. The Warriors got on the first, but then Davis answered when Lori Templeton hit a penalty kick midway through the period. Weber then got another goal for their 1 halftime lead. But in the second half Davis dominated. I think they were a little worried because we were the only team to beat them in regular season, Templeton said. Where Weber may have been tentative the second half, Davis began to exercise control. Teresa Shombcrg headed in the second Davis goal and then forward Heather Peel scored to give the Darts their first lead.
