The chief symptom is weakness which may columnist Hot, muggy weather predisposes us to the development of a heat disorder, particularly if we exercise or work outside in the heat be associated with nausea and faintness. The persons skin is sometimes pale and cool, and may be quite moist with sweat. Vomiting may occur. Body temperature elevation can occur, but usually doesn't go over 101 degrees. Victims of heat exhaustion should be treated similar to those with heat cramps and moved promptly to a cool place and given dilute salt ' water or bouillon water mixed as of the day, or even indoors in rooms which are not air conditioned. The heat disorders are classified in three different categories: heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat cramps are a mild problem, heat exhaustion becomes more of a serious concern, and heat stroke is a medical emergency. These problems are especially likely to happen to people who do endurance exercise such as jogging, and who push themselves a little bit harder than usual when - they are not fully conditioned or acclimated to high heat and humidity. Let's talk about each of these conditions individually. 1. Heat cramps. These cramps are muscle spasms which occur in the arms, legs or stomach. They are triggered by water loss from sweating a great deal without having that fluid replaced. The sodium or salt balance between muscle cells and tissue fluid becomes altered, triggering muscle spasms. These spasms can be mild or quite painful, and can occur during or after heavy activity. The treatment of a person with heat into a cool place and the body cooled off as fast as possible by removing clothing, sponging with cold water, even rubbing with ice or running cold water from a Family Health cramps is to push oral intake of water. Weak salt solution such as a teaspoon of salt to a quart of water is about the right ratio to add. A bouillon cube can be substituted for the salt and will provide some additional salts beside sodium. The person should also be moved out of the heat into a cool or shady area as soon as possible. It usually doesnt help to try to massage the muscles that are cramping in this case, but mild stretching may help prevent some of the discomfort. The individual should not be given salt tablets or just salt without liquid. That is dangerous and may actually draw water out of the tissues into the stomach, further aggravating the problem. 2. Heat exhaustion. Heat exhaustion is produced the same way as are heat cramps, by sweating, with strenuous exercise in humid hot weather, and not replacing the salt and water lost. It may also occur in an individual WIICI have persisted in sports include the one that drinking water or dilute liquid will give you cramps, make you bloated, or slow you down. It is not true replace water during your workout. Secondly, dont push or overwork yourself when you are not used to hot, humid days. Try to avoid heavy activity in the middle of the day. Thirdly, don't take salt in tablet form, or in other concentrated form. Concentrated salt just causes water to be drawn into the stomach, further aggravating the dehydration problem. Salt replacement solutions work better when they are dilute. If you cant tolerate a teaspoon of salt in a quart of water, it wont hurt to add a few teaspoons of sugar to make it more palatable. Once again, don't make it too sweet or youll defeat your pur hose. An ambulance should be called as soon as this cooling process has been started. Tell the ambulance attendants you think the patient has heat stroke so that they can be prepared to start IV fluids when they arrive to transport the patient to the hospital. Obviously an unconscious or partly conscious patient should above. not be forced to drink water or the dilute salt solution. Clothing should be removed and the patient sponged down If the victim regains consciouswith cool or cold water.
