Show A forum for opinion otooiisiO Review Wednesday August 13, 1986 4A Primary should bring out voters Primary elections dont ordinarily generate enough turnout among voters to bring them to the polls in large numbers. It might be more accurate to say voters tend to stay away in droves from the polls of primary elections. The primary coming up Tuesday in Davis County is unusual in several respects. Hopefully, it will also break with tradition in the area of residents as well as members ture and in the news media. of the Democratic Party. This Candidates will also debate year, the GOP is offering a those issues in open meetings In our view voter turnout because voters should be interested in the issues and the candidates involved. The Republicans have long held power in the county. It has become almost a y area, a situation which should cause some concern for one-part- choice of candidates for a majority of offices. Two incumbent county commissioners are facing competition from within their party along with the county sheriff and three state legislators and one state senator. Issues are many and have been addressed in campaign litera this week. Voters should be informed about the issues and the candidates stands on those issues. Most important is the need for voters to take their responsibility seriously and visit their polling places on 0H OK SOPHS YOU fERVOUS YET ARE Letters to the editor Remember to vote in primary elections Review editor: This is the first year that the primary election has been moved up to an August date. Remember to vote on Aug. 19. If you are planning to be out of town or on vacation, you may vote an absentee ballot. However, to vote absentee, you must go to the clerks office at the Davis County Courthouse on or before Aug. 5. Many people do not realize the importance of voting in the primaries. This is the time to use your voting privilege to make the difference, if you wait for the general election, you have only the choice of voting for the candidates who were chosen by those who voted in the primary election. You can make the difference. Use the primary election to express your satisfaction or dissatisfaction in the current form of county government. Arlene Hamblin Syracuse 1 'Enough is enough' on sheriff articles Review editor: believe that enough is enough! I opened your paper this week (Aug. 6) and thought I was the reading last weeks edition same story was staring me in the face another article concerning Sheriff Brant Johnson. I suggest you give Bryon SaxI or reinvest our money in a foreign country like Libya and South Africa. We subsidize the Easts wealthy. Kennecott Copper is a prime example of this business mentality. When the Freeport businesses build in a community and accrue a $1,000,000 utility bill yearly, this encourages Utah Power & Light and Mountain Fuel and many others to destroy our Western lands seeking more energy. We in Clearfield contribute our share to national policy. We support our national defense by harboring Hill Air Force Base. We in Clearfield sacrifice enough for our nation. The franchise tax on utilities would encourage these Freeport businesses to curb their energy consumption. These profiting businesses write their utility bills off on their taxes anyway they dont pay them you and I do and again we pay for their costs as consumers when we buy their products. From a personal point of view, I can live with a 4 percent on my utilities. I can always conserve energy and cut my consumptions of energy in my home if necessary. At least with the 4 percent not utility tax I have a choice so when they levy a fixed $40 property tax. Clearfield needs streets cleaned, sewers, snow removal, and street repair. A clerk at the Clearfield City offices stated that the first programs to go would be the parks, recreational programs for our children. The second issue that came up with Clearfield is one of the lowest manned and lowest paid police departments in the state! You cant get blood from a turnip! I would encourage all of you homeowners of Clearfield to call a council person just one, and tell them that you would prefer that this money that Freeport businesses are sending back East to spend some of it here - in Clearfield and reconsider the franchise tax. Please attend the next few Clearfield City Council meetings. s Dixie Clearfield see these violations almost every time I go there. The problem is there is no enforcement in the area around the lake. I have never seen a DWR officer at this lake, have never had my license checked or talked to anyone who has. The kids swim there almost every day during the summer. They use the same trees every year to hang ropes from. I can only find three small wood signs that have been placed near the dam recently. There are no trash cans or other receptacles for people to use. In general, the area is overlooked by the DWR. I dont want to excuse the public that use and abuse the facility but you need to ensure compliance with the law, not just hang out a sign. Im sure the property owners have allowed public access for fishing with the understanding that the DWR would insure compliance with the intended use (fishing only). So how about asking the DWR to get with it. Raise our license fees again if you must, but lay off those signs and get out there where people can see you.
