Show a 'cS Page 3D Lakeside Review Wednesday, July 10, 1985 Roy Resident Area Student Wins Air Force Award at Science Fair ROY Wayne Estes, a junior at Roy High School, went to He then went on to the Regional Science Fair at Weber State College and after winning second place in the earth and science division, won an all expense-paid trip to Shreveport where he competed in the International Science Fair. More than 750 students from throughout the United States and 28 countries competed in the competition. Wayne, along with 11 other students, was selected a fair winner and received an invitation from the Air Force to take an escorted, one week, all expense-pai- d Washington, D.C., at the invitation of the U.S. Air Force after winning the Air Force Award at the International Science Fair in Shreveport, La. Estes designed and built a model of a storage device which uses the heat of solution of sodium hydroxide to store solar energy. With his project, entitled Chemical Storage of Solar Energy, he won 12 awards at the Roy High School Science and Engineering Fair in February. tour of Air Force research and development facilities. The tour was hosted by the Air Force Systems Command which is responsible for the research, development, test, evaluation, and acquisition of aerospace systems for the Air Force. The tour started at seven-da- y Andrews AF Base, Md., which included a visit to the Pentagon and lunch with Air Force officials. Estes also met with the commander of Air Force Systems Command, Lawrence A. Skantze. n He flew to AF Base, Ohio, which not only Wright-Patterso- included a tour of the base, but a tour of the Air Force Museum, the largest and most complete military aviation museum in the world. Arnold AF Station in Tennessee, the largest aerospace ground test complex in the Free World, hosted Estes also. He visited wind tunnels, jet and rocket altitude cells, space chambers and ballistic ranges used in testing and evaluating new aerospace systems for the Air Force and other government agencies. The Roy student also visited Brooks AF Base, Texas which is responsible for research and development for the application of d technologies as they apply to weapon system design and operation. Miss Anderson, who attends Roy High School, was nominated for this National Award by Mrs. Terry Sheffield, a cheerleader advisor and English teacher at the school. She will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, published nationally. Recognizing and supporting our youth is more important than ever before in Americas history. Certainly United States Achieve- - The Academy selects USAA winners upon the exclusive rec- ommendation of teachers, coaches, counselors or other school sponsors and upon the Standards of Selection set forth by the Academy. The criteria for selection are a student's academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, citizenship, attitude and cooperative spirit, dependability, and recommendation from a teacher or director. CHRISTY ANDERSON Miss Anderson is the daughter of Cliff and Jolene Anderson. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Stoker of Huntsville, Utah and Mr. Kieth Anderson of Clinton, Utah. She has been a cheerleader for five years. Two years she cheered for Roy Jr. High under the direction of Mrs. Diane Gibson. The past three years she has cheered for the Roy High Royals. As a member of Roy Highs squad, she, with the group, held three state and two national titles. While at the USA camp for cheerleaders, Christy was one of seven chosen to be on the USA squad, from among 600 cheerleaders. She also won a silver medal for her efforts and ability at the National Cheerleading Championship held in California. Four Area Students A warded $500 Mervyns Scholarships Four area students are the recipients of $500, 1985 Mervyn G. Morris Scholarships. The scholarship recipients are Carrie Bradley, Kimberly Harmon, Traci Larsen, and Sheri Stoddard. Carrie is the daughter of Judy Bradley. Kimberly is the daughter of Deanna Harmon. Traci is the daughter of Elaine Larsen, and Sheri is the daughter of Claudia Stoddard. Carrie and Kimberly attended Clearfield High School. after the founder of the company, Mervyns, is given as an incentive to pursue higher education. Funding is made possible through employee donations and is offered to the children and grandchildren of Mervyns employees. Ninety one recipients were judged on scholarship, participation in extracurricular activities, and financial need. Judging is conducted' by the San Lorenzo, (CA) District Scholarship Foundation. Both plan to enroll at Weber State College, where Carrie will study clerical science and Kimberly will major in English. Traci attended Viewmont High School in Bountiful and plans to enroll at the LDS Business Col-- , lege where she will major in Business Administration.
