What was once an innocent way to be alone with your date, such as gois now ing to the park or a drive-inthe setting for rape. Flirtation, even unwittingly at that, can be considered just cause for a date, boyfriend, or Fiance', to find justification for taking advantage of his or her date. As moral ideals and values have changed over the years, so have expectations between dates and their partners. According to Susan Murray, counslor at the Rape and Sexual Abuse Center at over 50 percent of all rapes reported acquaintance rapes. These centers also encourage women to report the crime to the police. If rape does occur, it is suggested that the victim should not lake a bath. If possible, she should call a friend or family member, then the police. It is imperative to go to the hospital for a thorough examination and discuss alternatives, should there be a comas such plication injury, diseasefAIDS), or possible pregnancy. After the victom is physically examined, the mental scars must be dealt with. There are, through the police, hospitals, or the phone book, numbers to call for rape victonvs. One of the most important things to remember, however, is that the victom is not resposible for the liberties taken against her. The act was not brought on simply by accepting the date. Nor does it matter if the guy becomes angry if she says NO. It is obvious that even If traps are avoided, a person may still end up in a compromising situation with a date. If so, it is best to stay calm and try to talk reasonably to the attacker without tearing down his ego or trying to hurt him. |
