Its true that we have more than our share of blonde hair and blue eyes. But even though the student body may look Dean shares opinion with Dixie College By Dr. Timothy By water A few weeks ago, Professor Ed Reber wrote an editorial describing his vision of the ways our campus newspaper could best serve Dixie College students. He listed four: 1 . as a practical learning experience for newspaper staff members, 2. as an information source for faculty, staff and student body, 3. as an ombudsman for students who need a powerful voice to champion their causes, and 4. as a driving force to encourage original thought and to search for truth. I wholeheartedly agree with Professor Reber, and I would like to broaden his vision a bit further. I believe that what is true for THE DIXIE SUN is true for Dixie College as well. First, Dixie does offer practical skills courses for students not desiring to continue their education past the sophomore year. Unlike the degrees offered at four year schools, which do not stress job skills training during the first two years, our associate degree can provide an immediate opening into the job market after only two years of study. Second, Dixie College does, as do all institutions of higher education, serve as an information center for students, faculty and community members to help us keep pace with the information explosion. The heart of this information center is, of course, the library. And although ours is not a major research library, the resources, thanks to our computer capability and interlibrary loan, are remarkable. Our campus is small, the library is not intimidating, and the library staff provides quality, personal help. As a result, the job of retrieving information is much easier than it is at a major research university library. Also, faculty members in every division, teachers in the ASC, and members of the administration and staff dispense much valuable information to students and to members of the community. Third, as ombudsman, teachers, administrators, and staff at Dixie, more visibly than at other colleges Im familiar with, are in the business of helping students. From my own teaching experience, I have never been associated with a school where students are more cared for than at Dixie College. The fact that Dixie has an open admissions policy enhances this idea of caring because everyone coming here has a chance to succeed. It may take you awhile to find the right person to champion your cause, but I guarantee that if youll risk getting to know your teachers, youll find one or more on your side. The classes are smaller, teachers often less threatening than their four year counterparts, and since our teachers are not as concerned with the pressures of research related publishing, they can put more time and energy where it really belongs, into teaching and student concerns. Fourth, there is no place in homogenous, in reality, there is diversity in experience and thought, which is so important if students are to expand learning opportunities outside class. College years are the perfect years to test ideas and beliefs, to encounter new ideas, and toexperiment in living as Henry David Thoreau put it. No atmosphere is more conducive to this pursuit than the college atmosphere, where individual ideas are open to discussion, and ideas shared by the majority and taken for granted as truths can be challanged. The results of this thinking process may be disquieting and discomforting, but they are stimulating and never dull. Dixie College is a place where the meeting of minds, or the jarring confrontation of minds, can lead to that rarity in life, original thought. Yes, Dixie College is a great place to spend the crucial tv years that begin the adventui called higher education. I: paraphrase a famous televisio; commercial: What institute of higher learning places it teaching emphasis on th( freshman and sophomore year and encourages community ir volvement, in order to insur the highest quality education experience in terms of a sound basic education, accessibility o information, support oi students, and an atmosphei conducive to original thought Is it Stanford? Is it Harvard Is it SUSC? No! Its Dia College.
