Things get a little complicated in Emmas life when her former husband Bobby Jack (Brian Kerwin) shows up one day on his motorcycle. Bobby Jack is a charmer with his beach blond hair and his boyish ways. He also pinches a few dollars from Emmas purse when he gets the even chance, and cheats at poker when the stakes are measured in match sticks. Murphys Romance is a collaboration between the husband-wif- e writing team of Harriet Frank and down-to-eart- If you like movies the way they used to make em, take in Murphys Romance. Its unpretentious, simple a bit predictable, sure but full of affection. Before long, she does find an ally in Murphy Jones, the towns h Irving Ravetch, and director Martin Ritt, the people behind such filrrs as The Long, Hot Summer," "Hud and "Norma Rae. The latter film brought Field her first Oscar. This new movie is more than the earlier collaborations, but cred ates equally memorable, characters. light-hearte- d well-rounde- Garners Murphy is particularly enjoyable. The actor takes a touch of cynicism, a dose of eccentricity and blends it with his effortlessly engaging humor. Murphy is an odd mixture: He has strong basic values of whats right and whats wrong. He is an unabashed environmentalist who champions a nuclear-fre- e society through bumper stickers attached to his antique automobile. He takes on City Hall by ignoring the parking tickets attached to this same car that stands parked in front of his pharmacy so he can keep his eye on it. There's a dark side to Murphy as well. The cynicism in Murphy comes, perhaps, from a troubled past and a bout with drinking. Murphys a great character, and Garner makes the most of him. As Emma, Field gives us what we would expect from her: Spunk, strength and a touching vulnerability. While this isnt Fields most demanding role, it nonetheless is a part tai- lored to her talents. Together, Field and Garner make a terrific pair. Promised Valley Playhouse will hold auditions Saturday for the supporting role of Tony Abbott in Harry Segalls comedy Heaven Can Wait, Kerwin is the real surprise in this movie. There are more acting tools I can use, and, in all honesty, you become so Marty People have said to me included that I should have the faith to loosen up. To just let it all go for a while. That is very hard for me, but it wasnt as hard as I had anticipated in Murphys Romance because of Jim. Hes just a great guy hes easy to anybody can see that be around. I could just react to him and not feel that I had to use a lot of serious preparation to create a character. I just had to be there. I know more about what Im doing when Im playing an Edna or a Norma. I feel much more certain or my work. In Murphys Romance I felt like I was falling. And Marty would say that the task here was to just relax and let myself fall. . Field never envisioned herself becoming involved in the business end of making movies. I never really yearned to run my own company," she said. I liked doing my work, and the going home. However, the reality of making films these days all but requires that; if an actor wants to work, he or she must participate in one way or another in the development of a project. Its the only way you can ensure that theres going to be work around that you really want to do, said Field. to producer Recently remarried Alan Greisman (Fletch) and nine months shy of 40, Field is optimistic about keeping busy in coming decades in a business which is notorious for ignoring women after they enter middle age.
