The main change was a shift from rote memorization (such as of the multiplication table) to emphasis on meaning and concept to give the pupil insight into what he is doing and The elements of set theory constitute the most basic and important topic of the new math Even a kindergarten child can understand, without formal definition, the meaning of a set of red blocks, the set of f.ngers on his left hand and the set of his ears and eyes The technical word "set' is merely a synonym for many common words that designate an aggregate of elements The child can understand that the set of fingers on his left hand and the set on his right hand match, that is, the elements, fingers, can be put into a correspondence The set of fingers on his left hand and the set of his ears and eyes do not match. one-to-o- set theory are extended as the child advances, upon graduation from high school, his knowledge is quite comprehensive The amount of new math and the particular topics taught vary from school to school. Many educators believe that a child who studies the new math under competent teachers will not only be able to do routine arithmetic as well as a child trained in the traditional manner, but will also be far ahead in understanding and in preparation for advanced mathematics. The new math is new only in that the material is introduced at a much lower level than before. Thus geometry, which was and is commonly taught in the econd year of high school, is now frequently introduced, in an elementary fashion, in the fourth grade. At an early stage, numbers are identified with points on a line and the identification is used to introduce, much earlier than in the traditional curriculum, negative numbers and the arithmetic processes involving them. Some concepts that are developed by this method are counting, equality of number, more than, and less than. The ideas of union and intersection of sets and the complement of a set can be similarly developed without formal definition in the early grades. The principles and formalism of GIMINI MA! v (?? At trick three, declarer must cross to dummy with a heart and lead a club toward his hand. If East pops up with the queen, he is allowed to hold the trick; if he plays low, declarer rises with the ace and ducks a club, hoping to find that East had started with either a douNine tricks bleton queen or come rolling home. The two women selected will represent the state at the national convention in April in Portland, Ore. Special to The Tribune Wendover officials claim there are a number of historical landmarks in the area and are requesting President Reagan declare the area a National Historic Site. The West Wendover Advisory Board has drafted a letter requesting the action and has asked Utah and Nevada historical societies to join in the effort. Dick McDougal, a member of the board, said the letter is an attempt to preserve and publicize notable historical events in the area. WENDOVER He said that, for example, it is hoped the Enola Gay, the airplane used to drop the first atomic bomb, could be returned to Wendover from the Smithsonian and a museum built to provide information about the war effort in Wendover. Planes and crews trained at Wendover for the first dropping of an atomic device. Mr. McDougal also noted that Three Mile Hill west of Wendover gives one of the few views of the curvature of the earth. He also noted the first intercontinental telephone connection was made June 17, 1914., 90 DAY FREE INTEREST ZCMl Charge, Visa, Mastercard or American Espreea. I |
