Show 10A The Salt Lake Tribune, Friday, January 31, llfsti Grumbling Americans Obey Order lo Leave Libya By Michael Goldsmith Associated Press Writer About 100 TRIPOLI, Libya American oilmen, engineers and executives flew to Europe Thursday, two days ahead of the deadline President Reagan set for all U.S. citizens to leave Libya. An estimated 1,500 Americans were living in Libya when Reagan issued the order after the Dec. 27 terrorist attacks at the Rome and Vienna airports. An unknown number left during the past two weeks. Many who boarded planes at the Tripoli airport Thursday said they were leaving for good because of the order, which says Americans still in the country after Feb. 1 will risk prosecution. Others said their purpose was to get Libyan exit stamps in their pass ports to prove their departure, but they planned to return as soon as possible. Libyan officials usually do not stamp the passports of Americans entering the country. The main American oil and service companies that account for a large share of this North African country's main industry have uecided to dose their Libyan operations at least temporarily. Some of their executives were among those leaving Thursday, including Howard Washburn of the Oasis Oil Co., and Ronald Cooner, manager of the Western Geophysical Corp. of Houston, Texas.
