Show 6M The Salt Lake Tribune Friday, January 31, 1986 lIVi INTIRTAINMINT Complex film flawed by simple treatment By Terry Orme Tribune Staff Writer When you consider how women are portrayed in many Hollywood films, it Is easier to forgive the male portraits in German director Margarethe von Trottas Sheer Madness. But the flat characterizations are annoyingly manipulative nonetheless, and detract from if diswhat is often an interesting film. turbing Sheer Madness explores the dark, and ultimately tragic, relationship that grows between two women. Olga (Hanna Schygulla) teaches women's literature at the local cola woman lege. She's with more than one man in her life. Ruth (Angela Winkler) is the direct opposite. Shes introverted, unable to communicate with others. She is dependent on her husband, who turns that dependency into a cruel manipulation. Olga and Ruth meet under bizarre circumstances. They are both guests at a common friends house in the country. One night Ruth disappears, spurring a search. Olga finds her hiding in a cavern built for wine storage. Ruth is sitting in the dark with a noose around her neck. From this haunting beginning, von Trotta spins a story about the friendship that grows between these two and the jealousy and anger it arouses in their lovers. Ruth is an artist whose psychosis is reflected in the fact that the only art IST IS J 0 &MaQ'ic 1075 presents o 0 Q 6) o 0) o 0 Q Qgj G ; ; ! KA1," MEET MR. F.X. "MARK TWAIN" starring she creates is black and white copies of the masters The suggestion is that she has been smothered artistically, as well as psychologically, by her husband who has his own psychotic fear of losing his wife. Yet, there is a hint that Ruth is capable of more, and that, indeed, she has an entire body of unseen work that is uniquely her own. There are instances when von Trotta inserts a feeling of hope that Ruth will climb out of her shell. These moments are soon dashed, though, ny the machinations of her husband. The virtues of this film are found in the performances by Schygulla and Winkler as their characters grow into a complex friendship. Olga and Ruth are like opposites who feed off one another. The fact that they are so different is what attracts them to each other. Von Trotta effectively takes us inside these characters. We experience Ruths strange dreams, filmed in black and white, and are left wondering what they mean. The problem with Sheer Mad:; ,s comes when the film begins to simplify the complex situation it has created. The men can't cope wi.h Olga and Ruths friendship because it threatens their own relationships with these women. What begins as a provocative and complex look at the needs and wants of friendship eventually turns into a shrill diatribe against mens manipulation of women. Sheer Madness is in German with English subtitles. It begins a limited run Friday at the Blue Mouse.
