Just ask her opponents. So far this season, Olympus is thanks, in part, to Mindy. The Titan senior is one of the top prep players in the stale. She is tough off the boards, averaging 9 rebounds and 20 points a game. Against Kearns she scored 26 points. Olympus Woods Cross Tournament early in the preseason, led by Tanner who was named MVP, "Ever since junior high school it has really been an important thing to her," Olympus coach Linda Mayne said. "She'll go to any camp she can find, (including boys camps) She really has been dedicated," But basketball wasn't always on Tanner's mind, won the "In sixth grade I swore I would never play. But I know I have the height Ever since 8th grade I've gone to camps. Tanner picked up the sport from her younger brother "My brother was really athletic and I would shoot with him," explained the Titan senior. As for " her moves under the basket .1 had to do something to play I against my brother, he's guess it came naturally. I needed something to fake him out. , . Tanner is such a threat from inside that often opponents double or triple team her But Olympus has other methods of putting points on the board. "Everyone has double teamed her that we have played so far," said Mayne. She has made more points with two or more people on her than anyone. We usually try taking the ball inside in the beginning of the game They opponents make changes and double team Mindy, then our guards take over. Guards Amy Timmons and Wendy Norman are capable of putting the ball up form the corners Along with Tanner, junior Sue Lyons and sophomore Amy Goureiy play the inside in either a double or triple post offense, "I knew we would be good, we work really well together," Tanner said of a team that saw three starters return from last season. "I think our region is tough, so I couldnt say that we will take region," said Mayne. "Were among the lop three teams. But Cyprus and Skyline could win, too. You end up playing 20 games, its foolish to think you wont lose." "I just want to play my best this season," Tanner said. "I want us to play as a team. I hope we can lake and state is always a possibiliregion " ty Tanner also participates in volleyball and track. Besides spending a lot of time in athletics she manages to maintain an honor roll GPA, despite taking AP honor classes. "She is also a very good student," said Mayne. By Patti Auer Tribune Staff Writer A broken arm can mean Double. For Skyline Highs Scott Teerlink it meant the end of the swimming seaeven before it began. Or did it? son Sidelined for several weeks from prep diving action last season, burdened with a heavy cast on his arm, It appeared that Teerlink chances of state diving title winning the were almost mil. But the Skylme.diver beat Lhe odds. Entering the state meet, just four weeks after having a cast removed, Teerlink surpassed the competition and won the championship. "I broke my ann playing basket--bal- l, and had a cast on for seven weeks," explained Teerlink. "It Was a waterproof cast so after a while I was able to dive, But when it was wet it was really heavy. I could dive but I was off balance. " "I just practiced a lot to get going again. The competition was really tight. I just thought about my dives. "It was quite a feat to win with such an injury, said coach Kurt Warnecke. "He put in a lot of workout time. He did well considering the time he had to dive without the cast and readjust." Once kgain Teerlink is among the top divers in the state. Thus far he stands in first place in competition. "It looks good right now, that he will repeat the title, said Warnecke. "But there are a lot of strong divers. He is running scared but running hot. He has a lot of natural ability. , Column See - lr Mindy Tanner i Teerlink has not done too bad for someone that just picked up the sport only a few years ago. Teei link, now a senior, did not dive competitively until high school. "The first time he dove coinpeti tivelyl was really scary, I didnt know anything," remembered Tecrlink. "I look last for a long time." "We had a neighborhood pool and my cousin and I used to screw around. I didnt receive any coaching until high school." There was an immense improvement from when he first started." said Warnecke, who has coached Teerlink for two years "He had a lot of raw natural talent." Well, fourth place is exactly last, and thats what Teerlink took as a sophomore at the state meet Last season he won the title and hope to repeat the feat. , 1 SV-5- SOLID COMFORT with no string attached.
