Show actor carries kick Soft-spok- en By John Voland Special to the Los Angeles Times HOLLYWOOD In the climactic scene of the latest "fiocky" installment, Capt. Ivan "Death From Above" Drago, the Soviet Union's Great White Hope, strides confidentMoscow ly through a screaming crowd to take on the lazy imperialist Rocky Balboa, the representative of ihe doomed, decadent West. Mirroring the gigantic poster of that looms over the arena, there is steel in the young captain's eyes as he throws off his red robe and steps mward the center of the ring . . . OK, so it is a bit much. Still, the all image that Dolph Lundgren and 240 pounds of him renders as Drago is one of patriotic eugenics gone bonkers, a super-boxe- r who, to quote "Rocky IVs" ad copy, has an entire country in his corner. It's tough enough playing a bad guy when he's only motivated by his own desires," said Lundgren, in an interview here. "But when he stands for a whole country, a way of life, that you're supposed to find distasteful well, thats asking quite a bit, I think." Especially, one might add, when the role is your first national exposure of any substance and when yourj background is in and (chemical engineering rather than acting. "Yes, I went through the graduate-schoo- l wringer at the University of Sydney (in Australia) and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but the modeling thing took over, es him . . kick-boxin- g pecially once I got here," Lundgren said. From there, acting didn't seem like a huge step. So I dropped out of the PhD. program at MIT, came down to New York, got an acting teacher and went for it." blond hair, Lundgrens features blue eyes, sculpted frame were a decided plus for Drago (even if he is not terribly but his smile something he had worked on quite a bit while modeling, he said was lost on the cutting room floor. "If I ever smiled during the course of the take, the editor had to go back later and slice it all out," Lundgren said. "I was just supposed to glower. Sly (Stallone, who directed the film) kept telling me to be a machine, but I just couldnt help it sometimes." Indeed, in the finished product, Lundgren-as-Draghardly speaks, save to grunt menacingly from time to time. But the former European champ (two years rundefends that ap) ning, in boxproach to defining this bad-guer. "I think Drago's really not a bad, bad guy. Hes just like another fighter in the ring; all he wants to uo is win," Lundgren said. "The big difference between Rocky and me is that hes a free agent or at least has to answer to less malign powers while Drago is a tool of the state, existing only to exhibit the superiority of the Soviet system. And hes kind of naive; hes really like a lab animal. He is one of those kids who are kept apart and trained like a thoroughbred, he doesn't do anything else."But hes not evil; hes just trying to Slavic-looking- ), o kick-boxin- g 1981-82- y be a winner, and the Soviet systems been very good to him up to this point in his life." Such a role conception should not leave much room for acting creativity, yet Lundgren said he found a number of ways to take the monolithic quality out of Ivan Drago. "If you watch Drago after it becomes clear that he is going to lose to Rocky, I tried to put a new awareness in his eyes," Lundgren said. "I kept thinking, 'Im being used for all this. It doesn't matter to them whether I kill this American, so long as I defeat him, and theres a kind of hopelessness, a slump of the shoulders, about him after that. He doesn't care to win for an elite that couldnt care less unless he wins." about him Audiences certainly care about who wins in this pugilistic summit to the tune of $100 million in its first even if, as five weeks of release Lundgren said, the characters volved are less than realistic. in- "Right now were in the middle of the Commando Era," he said. "I think it's just one phase, that veil eventually pass through. And in all these films the bad guys are really bad with no redeeming social qualities at all. For instance, Rambo was certainly, um, uncluttered with characterization; it was pretty But it was a huge hit; people loved it. No matter what people say about Stallone, he really gets right through the demographics nonsense; he knows exactly what people want to see, and gives it to them." And all that audience (and media) Dolph Lundgren, left, as Russian top hitter in Rocky IV delivers killing punches to attention cannot hurt a budding - ac- tors career, can it especially when that young star happens to have a Natalia Makarova says farewell to ballet NEW YORK Natalia Makarova has announced that she has decided to end her ballet career after nearly three decades of dancing. The international ballet star, who won a Tony in 1983 for her Broadway performance in "On Your Toes, said she hoped to continue acting. Makarova, 45, said she decided to stop dancing mainly because of the unchallenging ballet roles she had recently been offered. "I made this decision to kind of quit with ballet because of many reaballerina sons," the Russian-bor- n said over the weekend in a telephone interview from London, where she is filming a television series on ballet for the BBC. Not because of my phy not feel old. But there are sique. She said she had no challenges. made her decision just before Christmas. Might she be tempted back? I think its too late, because I went through a hard period to accept my decision, she said. "I will try another area because I feel full of energy. It is not good to spend energy that is not worth to spend. And the whole thing seems a wasting of energy." Makarova last danced in New York City in Roland Petits "Blue Angel, presented by the Berlin Ballet at the Metropolitan Opera House in July. Both the ballet and her performance received mixed notices. She will not dance, as announced, on Jan. 21 at perCity Center in the opening-nigh- t formance of the Ballet de Santiago. Makarova said, however, that she I do would introduce the company, directed by Ivan Nagy, a friend and former HOWTIMES. ADVERTISE partner at the American Ballet The- atre. She plans to speak from the stage that night, scheduled as a tribute to Lucia Chase, a founder and guiding spirit of Ballet Theater, who died Thursday. "Ivan decided to dedicate the performance to her memory, Makarova said. "We were most closest artists to her in the past 10 years. I will talk about Lucia Chase. Fifteen years ago was my debut as Giselle at City Center. Seems appropriate. I will try to be light as possible.
