Show ) "DU nihcVw,i jUf tnurf1 "V jriW r rorr Guitarists extraordinaire I 'nr thn C 'IVrn OniK Tribune Staff Writer TWO MUSICIAN'S often mentioned in the ,ame breath have new albums out John Fahey and protege Leo Kottke have been innovators of American guitar muMt over the years, and these albums Fahey's Live In Tasmania and Kottke's Guitar Music should tie included in the collection of any finger-pking aficianado F ahey has been credited with giving birth to the style, a style which contemporary finger-pickinemerged on his first album. Blind Joe Death. Only 95 copies of the disc, qiade in 1959, were pressed, but it nonetheless left its mark on American music His career started in a Langly, Md , gas station where Fahey whiled away the hours on the night shift playing guitar One evening an old friend dropped in, listened to a few licks, and suggested he make a record u Fahey didn't need much coaxing. He promptly borrowed $300, rented taping equipment and made Blind Joe Death. A few years later he moved west to Berkeley and started Takoma Records, named after his home town, Takoma Park, Md. FAHEY WAS NOT content to remain just a musician. He got his masters degree in folklore and mythology from UCLA, writing his thesis on bluesman Charley Patton. During his research he rediscovered the music of Delta country-blue- s musician Bukka White and legendary blues pianist, guitanst and vocalist Skip James. He also discovered and signed a young man by the name of Leo Kottke to his Takoma label. In his own words, Kottke plays the same old stuff m a different way. Like Fahey, Kottkes influences include such blues and country guitarists as Elizabeth Cotton, Charley Patton, and Mississippi John Hurt. He puts his stamp on traditional riffs with his exceptional technical abilities. When Kottke it is hard to believe that performs on his only one guitar is being played. Guitar Music features a mote subtle Leo Kottke. John Fahey has released his first live album , recorded in Tasmania. From Ry Cooders Available Space to his own Perforated Sleep, Kottke plays brilliant multilayered melodies and slow, soothing counterpoint. FANS OF KOTTKES voice will be disappointed that he doesnt sing on this album. But Guitar Music is nonetheless full of variety and among his best efforts. Tasmania is John Fahey's first live album in his 20 year recording career It was a spur of the moment decision by the guitarist and producer Peter Noble to record in Hobart, the capital of the island state of Australia. The album is pleasant and folksy without the dazzling technical virtuosity of Kottke. Faheys crossword puzzle Answer on Page picking is understated and subtle. It doesn't bowl you over, but is no less present. Funeral Song for Mississippi John Hurt is a lively and colorful tribute to the bluesman, a celebration instead of a lamentation. He includes a captivating version of Walzing Matilda and a rambling Indian Pacific Railroad Blues. The album catches Faheys quips with his Tasmanian audience. His wry sense of humor recalls Kottkes many appearances in the Salt Lake area. So with these two albums, two major influences in American music let us know that they are in fine form and should continue to make their marks for years to come.
