The man: William Penn. The PHILADELPHIAS HISTORY from until 1800 is inextricably linked to that of the American Revolution and the young United States. The First Continental Congress convened in Philadelphia at Carpenters Hall in 1774 The Second Continental Congress, which forged America's destiny, met in the Pennsylvania State House, later to become Independence Hall. It was there the congress made that fateful decision to prepare the Declaration of Independence, which was first read publicly July 8, 1776, in the State House Yard. Except for nine months during British occupation, Philadelphia was the Revolutionary War capital, and later continued in that roll for the fledgling nation. In 1787, the Constitutional Convention met to revise the Articles of Confederation and, for four months, 42 delegates secretly developed the Constitution of the United States. Philadelphia remained the nation's capital until cause-Religiou- 1774 freedom. Penn, a wealthy Quaker, persuaded King Charles II to grant him a parcel of land in the New World as payment for a debt owed his father by the Crown. His dream was to found a colony in which Quakers, and other religious minorities, would be free to practice their faiths. HE STEPPED ASHORE to claim his and launch his Holy Experiment in 1682. After naming the colony Pennsylvania, or "Penn's Woods, in memory of his father, Penn turned his attention to his new city. He designated the 1,280 acres on a peninsula between the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers as the site for Philadelphia, City of Brotherly Love from the Greek. Capt. Thomas Holmes, Penns chief surveyor, was given the task of laying out the city on a grid pattern, with five public squares to provide fresh air and sunshine for the residents of Penns faire countrie towne. The result was the worlds first attempt at urban planning. The five squares, named in customary Quaker tradition for their locations in the city, exist today, although the names have been changed. They are: Penn (Centre) Square, Washington (Southeast) Square, Franklin (Northeast) Square, Logan (Northwest) Circle formerly a square, and Rittenhouse (Southwest) Square. During the 19th century, Philadelphia continued on its progressive path. Business and industry flourished, and the city grew, annexing parts of the former countryside, such as Germantown and Fairmont.
