Show With proper care your photographs should last for years by Tony Spina Knight-Ridde- r Raitton Punna Company Wnter Q Can you please tell me how long the quality of color and photos unll last? 1 have some pictures that I want to keep for my children. I want to keep some in a frame for viewing. Are there any precautions I should take? I would appreciate any information. A Your color photographs should provide you with years of enjoyment, providing you take the proper care and avoid certain environmental factors regarding their preservation. The length of time a color photograph retains its true color depends on, among other things, the environment in which it is displayed or stored. Photographic dyes, like dyes used in other products, can change with time. Factors such as sunlight, ultraviolet radiation, excessive heat and humidity accelerate the changing of photographic dyes. Try to avoid direct sunlight or bright lights of any kind on the photoparticularly fluorescent graphs. Keep your pictures out of attics and basements where hot and humid conditions may exist. This is only a guide to help you get many more years out of your color photos. e Now, photographs have a more lasting quality. There are no dyes to fade, but the same precautions should be taken with them as with the color pictures. It is always good to display both color and photographs under normal brightness . . . preferably indirect lighting. Q I am going on a vacation and would like some advice on how to protect my camera against theft. One way to protect your camera from thieves is to carry it with you at all times, on a neck strap or in a camera bag with a strong, leather strap that cannot be easily cut or broken. Its also worthwhile to check into insurance for your camera equipment; premiums are relatively inexpensive. As an added measure of security, you can get a special pen, called an electrograph, and engrave your Social Security number on each piece of equipment. Cameras marked this way are harder to fence. Jewelry stores use such a pen for engraving jewelry, and for a small charge they will engrave your camera.
