Show 6M Friday, March The Salt Lake Tribune 4 16, 1984 La Nuil de Varennes Fascinating mix of fact and fancy By Terry Orme Tribune Staff Writer In the new film "La Nuit de Varennes we never learn what King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were thinking as they fled Paris and revolution, traveling toward the French border and waiting allies in 1791. Nor do we learn what they were thinking when recognized by peasants in the little town of Varennes, and detained before being returned to Pans and, eventually, the guillotine. Film review The only glimpse we ever have of this king and queen, in fact, is of their feet, nervously pacing a storekeepers floor. We learn of their plight obliquely from a motley group of travelers riding in a horse-draw- n coach behind the royal couple and their children. Among this group is an aged Casanova (Marcello Mastroianni), who no longer is seducing women, but resisting their advances. Also along for the ride is ' Scolas new film is set in France in 1791, at the beginning of the French Revolution. Marcello Mastroianni plays aging Casanova in La Nuit de Varennes. The historical events are secondary to this unusual group of people thrown together through fiction. There is plenty of wonderful comedy as the women in the coach convince the men to take turns riding up top with the driver so they will have the company of the renowned lover, Casanova. Restif too is a jovial sort, who is not ashamed that many of his books are TUES. "Mia Farrow ...is "Touching, funny, sad and wonderful!' The exchanges between these passengers are sometimes caustic, sometimes flirtatious. That Louis XVI and Marie Antionette are in the coach ahead of them is hardly an issue. They have their own lives to worry about. When conversation turns to politics, there are knowing glances from those aware of who has traveled this road just before them. Others burst into dogma, others stare blankly at the passing countryside. Instead of a historical treatise from the Italian director Scola, La Nuit de Varennes (The Night of Varennes) provides a glimpse into a group of characters as people, not representations. There is the sad, broken down Casanova, a man slightly embarrassed by the reputation that precedes him.
