Show 6C Friday, March The Salt Lake Tribune Two NIT Games Set 16, 1984 Wildcats Host Fordharn Tonight - Webers Mr. Inside , Outside Eye NIT By R.C. Roberg Tribune Sports Writer OGDEN Weber State has its own version of Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside. Inside, theres the rugged re- Martin bounding of Nish. Outside, theres the sweet string music of Kent Hagans 6-- d jump shots. 20-fo- Together, theyve given the man-to-ma- bench Wildcats a dimension that Weber Coach Neil strength McCarthy hasnt had in several seasons. Both Nish and Hagen will be making their first National Invitation Tournament appearances here Friday at 8 p.m. in the Dee Center when the Wildcats host Fordharn University from the Bronx, N.Y. Kent Hagen Mr. Outside Martin has excellent speed and quickness and is an extremely physical player, McCarthy says. He plays with a high level of intensity and makes our front line very strong. I dont play center that much, said Nish, who has played both center and forward this year. But every once in a while I have to do it. I do the best I can do and be as strong as I can inside. Nish said he likes to play under pressure situations because it gets him psyched. And the more physical the game, the better he likes it-like the physical game myself. Thats probably one reason why I play well. I like the contact under the boards. Martin Nish Set for NIT Nish takes pride in giving the Wildcats rebounding muscle off the bench, and he doesnt mind tossing in a few points too along the way. The muscular Nish, whose father Robert played at Weber State when the school was a junior college, doesnt try to finesse anybody. He just grinds it out inside. He pushes and shoves and gets pushed and shoved, but rarely, if ever, complains to the officials. Its a facet of the game Nish has come to accept. Yet, he hasnt fouled out in 29 games. Hagan, who was named this week as the Big Sky Conferences top reserve, prefers to snipe away from long range. Hagan brings back old memories of another fine Snubbed Teams May Hold Own Tourney - A handful of college basketball teams are all dressed up with 20 victories and no place to go. Loyola Coach Gene Sullivan, n snubbed by selectors a third straight year, wants to lure the leftovers to an affair of their own, call it the Cinderella Invitational Tournament and hand a silver slipper to the winner. Sullivan met Thursday with the potential backers of the event, set for either of the last two weekends in March in the 10,000-seUniversity of Illinois-Chicag- o pavilion. He estimated he would need a minimum of $50,000, but declined to name the major coporation" in- CHICAGO (AP) post-seaso- volved. It should be a howling success for the guys not invited to the big balls (the NCAAs and National Invitation Tournament). We had a better record than 24 of the 32 teams playing in the NIT this year, said Sullivan, whose Ramblers finished 20-this 9 season. Sullivan has extended bids to the inaugural event to Bucknell Illinois-Chicag- o George Mason Montana Navy Sanford (22-8- ) and Ohio Universi(24-5- (22-7- (21-7- ty (23-8- ), ), ), ), (24-8- ), (20-8- ). when the Wildcats need a quick shot in the arm. While sitting on the bench, Hagan concentrates on the defense and works over in his mind what shots will work for him when he gets into the flow of play. His studying to be a chiropractic specialist, perhaps, helps him to properly diagnosis the ailment and find the proper cure. "I usually watch to see what type n of zone or defense a team is playing and look for the gaps to get open for the shot, said Hagan. He credits his teammates, especially point guard John Price, with helping him get open for the shots. John is able to penetrate and draw the defense to him. He then dishes the ball off to me for the open shot, said Hagan, who usually rewards Prices work with an assist. Wildcat outside shooter, Bruce Col- lins. Hagan wont intimidate anyone under the basket like Nish does, but his deadly outside shooting can bust up any zone. His shot may be a little unorthodox, but the results hes gotten from it arent. Hagan is the top reserve off the Weber bench, scoring just under 10 points a game. That may not seem like much these days with guys like BYUs Devin Durrant and Wayman Tisdale of Oklahoma hovering around the mark. But its not the amount of points Hagan scores, its when he scores them. Hagan usually gets a quick summons off the bench from McCarthy well-design- 7 BAND Although he admits he would like to be starting, Hagan has come to accept his reserve role without quarrel: Greg Jones (Webers starting guard along with Price) is as good as there is. I know my role. Ive come to accept it. Playing behind a player like Jones is no disgrace. Im happy just to be playing again, said Hagan, trying to forget last Fridays 8 loss to Nevada-Ren- o in the semifinals of the Big Sky tournament that knocked the Cats out of the NCAAs. The Hawks lost three of four, including a 7 upset to St. in the first round of the conference tournament. The Hawks, who upset DePaul earlier in the year, probably still were alive for an NCAA bid until the St. Bonaventure loss. Coach Jim Boyle said, however, that his team is excited to be in the Bona-ventu- 68-6- re NIT. Only so many teams go to the NCAA and unfortunately, we were not one of them, he said. I think it will be a good game. The kids are excited and theyre looking forward to it. And it was a break playing in the Palestra. Boyle also hopes the NITs red, white and blue basketball helps cure woes. In its the Hawks three losses down the stretch, St. Joes made just 36 of 75 free throws, a mark of 48 percent. Thats ironic, he said. Weve been practicing with it. You can see the rotation on the foul shots and that has helped. Maybe that problem has been solved. The Cinderella would represent another volley by Sullivan, long considered a maverick by his peers, in his battle with college basketball's establishment especially the NIT selection committee.
