Open points 3 44 ? 344 ? 315 293 302 ? 295 Mar Jun Aug Oct Dec Feb Apr Dollar Rallies to Snap Slump The dollar staged NEW YORK (AP) a late rally Wednesday in the United States to snap a two-daslump as interest-rate jitters surfaced again on foreign y exchange markets. The price of gold, which rose in Hong Kong and Europe to flirt with $400 an ounce, fell sharply late in the day as the dollar climbed. In after-hour- s trading in New York, bullion was bid at $393.75 a troy ounce as of 4 p.m. EST at Republic National Bank, down $4.25 from the late bid Tuesday. Typical of the dollar's performance was its trading against the Japanese yen. As the trading day began in Tokyo, the dollar fell to 223.35 Japanese yen from 224 55 yen Tuesday. By day's end in the United States, however, the dollar had climbed to 224.60 yen, against a late U.S. rate Tuesday of 223.275 yen. The British pound also was buffeted by the dollars swings. In London, the pound rose to $1.47435 from $1.4640 on Tuesday. But later in New York, sterling fell to $1 46135 from $1 4720 at the end of the previous day. Scott Pardee, executive vice president' of Discount Corp. in New York, said the dollar's rebound was a "quick knee-jerreaction to growing signs of another jump in interest rates in the United States. Among those signs was a rise in the federal funds rate to 10 percent in U.S. money markets. The federal funds rate, the interest on overnight loans between inbanks and a peg for many short-terterest rates, has been rising steadily after averaging 9.5 percent in January. NaRoy Moor, chief economist at First tional Bank in Chicago, citing the rising cost of funds for banks and a surge in business borrowing, predicted an increase in the prime lending rate at U S. banks "could come as early as Friday." The prime rate, the base upon which banks compute interest charges on shortterm business loans, has stood at 11 percent since lasj August k Pardee said currency traders have become sensitized to higher interest rates in the United States. High interest rates, which make returns attractive on investments, helped propel e the dollar to heights against several Western European currencies in January. The dollar then dropped dramatically for eight weeks, despite continued increases in interest rates, amid concern over large U.S. budget deficits and faltering performance of investments on U.S. stock and bond markets. But Pardee said traders remember how badly burned they were in the last three or four years when U.S. rates went up" and turned again to the dollar on Wednesday. Late dollar rates in Europe, compared with late rates Tuesday, included: 2.5510 West German marks, down from 2.5760; 2.11125 Swiss francs, down from 2.12725 7.8575 French francs, down from 7.9405 2.88075 Dutch guilders, down from 2.9085 1,587.75 Italian lire, down from 1.600.50; and 1.2733 Canadian dollars, up from dollar-denominat- all-tim- 1.2665. Dollar rates in New York as of 4 p.m. EST, compared with late rates Tuesday, included: 2.58475 West German marks, up from 2.57275; 2.1430 Swiss francs, up from 2.1265; 7.960 French francs, up from 7.9250; and 1.2738 Canadian dollars, up from 1.2707. Gold rose to $339.77 a troy ounce in Hong Kong from $377.73 Tuesday. Later in Europe, bullion climbed $2 25 to a late bid of $400 an ounce in Zurich, and gold nudged up 25 cents in London to $398.50 Jun Dec t Pf troy Low Ooso 400 70 394 50 394 10 402 90 39S 00 395 80 399 10 409 70 400 00 402 40 4)6 50 409 00 409 20 423 20 417 00 416 20 Prev. 398 400 302 407 413 421 50 40 80 open bushels, per Ooto Fd Tx Exm F'e - open dosed 266 535 566 025 off 60 Seo Dec Estimated sates 16 contracts Settlement on prices previous Ooen interest 679 off 7 AAsk, NEW YORK Wednesday 25 COPPER: - Comex--25- 00 to.; Open cents per High Low Aug Seo Oct Dec Jan Mar open 20500 208 50 209 00 ?04 SO 70 00 50 50 199 50 00 201 50 201 50 203 00 203 00 205 50 206 00 Tuesday sates 8 8)7 interest 55 883 of 795 205 209 209 205 200 203 206 207 203 198 00 20 00 60 50 200 10 00 204 50 201 30 90 30 00 199 50 201 30 202 80 205 50 205 208 209 205 contracts, Ooen interest is reooried bv the thousands o bushels Settlement prices on ctose 60 676 9 99 10 40 6 93 7 2? 518 580 562 606 11 15 1205 Oot Etoc 1080 20 59 NL NL 1154NL 10 21 33 39 65 14 199 204 208 208 205 199 201 202 20 5 New York Dairy Market Tuesday CBOT Sl0?,71?.(m Today's clearings Same dav last year Interbank Selers Rates Bank America International, Source: m $110,956 BUTTER CHICAGO AND EGGS - Bulk selling cr,rei 0 (UPl; butter and eggs as mooned bv USDA Wednesday Butter Pr ces oato to devery jnchanged 93 S'Ore AAl 141 (9? score A) 14M4J , 43 55 077 15 Eggs Prices pato to oe vprv jnchan ged prices to igmie A in r8riofA on erect Extra targe 85 88 'arge 83 85 "eo 79 82 Over the Counter Destiny OF A infl DP A $mt Dree Co DG DvSr Dodg Bat DoogCx Dr Bufh 590 10 73 NL NL 1268 9 95 21 33 Bnd D'S 466 Ext 497 Glh HYl NO 1281 1342 1204 13 15 91 17 Grwth 1141 1241 Intmd NYT Ex $P Incm Tax E9 3rd Cent 7 79 03 693 686 11 Eag G' Eaton Vance: Eh Ba1 Eh $k Orwin Hi Y'fto inves' So Eq'v 15 44 10 74 11 31 T Mge VS Spec dnmsi per trov Federated ounce Wednesday S'cx Tax LONDON Previous Morning L to 39 L 7 ?9 1083 631 78 H68 690 462 8 57 505 9 37 45 8 14 66 13 13 95 15 Fr 6 74 65 NL 9 5! cnre aero Aoces-oEtca-j- e Live Beet Catot 2 S3 per trov ounce ?n me - r r Savtes Dv N L 6 93 1602 NL NL L N NL I N N L Fds: 867 9 56 103? 1128 Svcs: 1109 1196 1292 1393 333 3 59 1127 1189 70) 7 56 6 71 23 S'OCk Sr Tax EB 8 79 9 48 6 23 8 69 643 5V6 794 7 95 8 56 869 33 12 20 13 19 14 33 209? 20 8? 801 ?i?7 23 25 19 Fd 05 84 33 64 949 19 73 ?1 56 '545 16 12 58 13 tz 21 09 5 21 I2 22 98 1?9?
