Show rr--r 14B v The Salt Lake Tribune ? y irfB March Thursday, Director Ron Howard achieves his career goal 15, 1984 U By Bob Thomas Associated Press Writer Ron Howard BURBANK, Calif. enjoys directing movies so much that he passed up $50,000 a week as a TV series star. Howard, who has spent 17 of his almost 30 years in series, including seven as Richie Cunningham on Happy Days, has his third movie as a director released this month by Disney Studios, Splash. One might expect someone who started acting at 18 months and who has spent the rest of his life in the to be a mass of studio hurly-burl- y neuroses. Not Ron. I was lucky to have always had good relationships and good situations, he said, "so I had a very stable upbringing. You couldnt have asked for a more positive atmosphere than The Andy Griffith Show. The eight years I had on that series set the tone for the rest of my career. "The environment was ideal: the company was cohesive and creative; we had fun, and yet it was also a business. They were always considerate of me. For instance, they would change a schedule so I could play in a ballgame - Unlike other TV child stars, such as Jay North of Dennis the Menace, and Jerry Mathers of Leave It to Beaver, Howard said he didn't have to carry the show. Wasnt the Workhorse I wasnt the workhorse who had to be in every scene, he said. There were weeks when I wasn't in the show, and so I didnt face the problem of burning out. Howard spent two years in "The Smith Family, a series that starred Henry Fonda, and he has been cast in such movies as American Graffiti and "The Shootist, John Waynes final film. The young actor seemed to have found a goldmine in Happy Days, but he pulled out after seven years. The ABC series is now in its Uth and probably final season, and Howard could be earning much more than more suited for directing than acting because he didn't have the usual performers need to satisfy his ego. I enjoy working with people, meshing various peoples talents, and making them feel good about what we have created together," he said. Howard started modestly in 1974 Grand by directing the $602,000 Theft.Auto. It grossed $15 million. Then came Night Shift in 1982 with his pal Henry W'inkler for $6 million, with a gross of $34 million. He entered Splash after it had been dropped by United Artists and the Ladd Co. The project, which concerns the love affair of a young businessman (Tom Hanks) and a mermaid (Daryl Hannah), found an unlikely home at Disney Studios. Howard said he assured Disney executives that he would not dwell on breast shots and the picture would get a PG rating. Miss Hannah is seen nude from the rear but her flowing hair provides a coverup in frontal shots. the estimated $50,000 a week he left with. But there are no regrets, he said. I was in an odd position so that my departure didnt scuttle the series, he said. Last year, I returned which was fun to for a two-part- do. To the dismay of his agents, Howard decided he wanted to devote most of his energies to directing, which, in the beginning, would pay him much less money than acting. "I didnt choose to be an actor, my parents decided that for me, he said. Goal Oriented d I've always been a very true in was That person. school and in sports. Directing became a career goal for me. I had the example of my father. I always admired him because he had pursued his own goal. He left Oklahoma to try acting in New York and then Hollywood, and although he never became a star, he survived. Howard said his personality was goal-oriente- Marilyn Beck Steven Spielberg puts Reel to Reel project on hold Ron Howard prepares to shoot a climactic sequence in New York for Splash, his new movie which opened Friday. Supporting actor Oscars are wrongly categorized By Vernon Scott United Press International HOLLYWOOD John Lithgow k has turned in nominations for best supporting actor nominations for playing the transsexual in The World According to Garp and the lovelorn banker in Terms of Endearment. But he probably wont win the Oscar. Charles Durning also wired a pair of nominations for best supporting actor in successive years playing the dancing mayor in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and the comic Nazi in To Be Or Not To Be." He probably wont win either. Shepard Wont Win Nor will Sam Shepard for his role as Chuck Yeager in The Right Stuff, nor Rip Torn for his swamp farmer role in Cross Creek. The winner will be Jack Nicholson for his role as the reveling exastronaut in Terms of Endearment. Therein hangs a tale the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences would rather not hear. The line between best actor and best supporting actor and actresses as well is so thin as to be invisible. The judgment is left to the voters. Outstanding Performances Academy Awards were initiated in 1927-2- 8 to reward actors and actresses for outstanding performances. No provisions were made for best supporting performances. It wasnt until 1936 that the academy decided to reward the talented character actors and actresses. In those early days the Oscar was won by such distinctive players as Walter Brennan, Joseph Schildk-rau- t, Thomas Mitchell. Donald Crisp, Charles Coburn and Barry Fitzgerald. Many another supporting player received his due in nominations Mischa Auer, Stuart Erwin, Basil Rathbone and Akim Tamiroff in the very first year. Moment in Sun Gibers who had their moment in the nomination sun were Jack William Gargan. Claude Rains. Harry Carey, Gene Lockhart. James Gleason. Frank Morgan and Sidney Greenstreet. That was before heavy politicking on the part of academy members. A sort of corruption filtered in during the 1960s when actors playing genuine leading roles found the competition too tough and opted for the supporting actor category in Oscar campaigns. First to breach the gap in a blatant miscategorization was Walter Matthau w ho won the Oscar in 1966 back-to-bac- hard-workin- Oa-ki- for best supporting actor in The Fortune Cookie. with Jack Lemmon. It was a clear case of a heavyweight fighting in the lightweight dia genuine mismatch that vision would be disallowed by the World Boxing Association. Undeniably the Star Robert DeNiro played the title role in The Godfather Part II, yet ran off with the Oscar for best supporting actor in 1974. Clearly and undeniably, DeNiro was the star of the film. He won against such real supporting performances as those turned in by Michael Gazzo and Lee Strasberg in The Godfather Part II. An even more obvious miscalculated categorization took place in 1975 when George Burns won the best supporting actor award for his leading role in The Sunshine Boys, beating such true supporting candidates as Brad Durif, Burgess Meredith, Chris Sarandon and Jack War- Midnight Show Friday and Saturday First Run!
