Dear Ann Landers: I just read the comments of a Floridian, who said, Parents should treat their children the way they wish their parents had treated them. I say BALONEY! I treated my kids the way I wish I had been treated and they have not appreciated it one little bit. I tried to do just right. I listened to them, trusted them and let them have their say. I praised them and I loved them. Our two older ones are so messed up it is unbelievable. The younger ones are nothing to brag about either. Please tell me what I did wrong? Actually you dont have to tell me. I know. I cared too much, and tried too hard. May I give some advice to parents of very young children? First and foremost: Follow your instincts. Never mind what tSie experts say. Just look at their kids and you will see that many of them are thoroughly kooked up. promptly and effectively. When you set firm guidelines early, you let your children know exactly what is expected. If they step beyond those guidelines, then punishment should be swift and meaningful. Third: Don't be too eager to win their approval. Let them work at A Father Who Did winning yours. Eveything Wrong (Nashville, Tenn.) Dear Father Psychologists and experts in genetics still dont know why some children are winners and others are losers. We see too many exceptions to too many rules. We do know for certain that children who are abused or neglected often grow up with personality disorders. But some of those do well in spite of the odds that are stacked against them. Other children who were loved and had every advantage fall short of the mark. No one knows why these things happen. I implore you not to be hard on yourself. You did your best The same goes for the millions of others who share your feelings of failure. Dear Ann Landers: I recently heard that women who smoke have a much higher rate of cancer of the cervix. Can this be true? It doesnt make any sense to me. I can understand how smoking could cause lung cancer, but the cervix is a female organ that does not come in contact with cigarette smoke, so whats the connection? Please investigate this theory and Doubting Thomasina In explain. Berkeley Dear Berk: My medical consultants tell me that cigarette-smokin- g women have at least four times as many cervical cancers as women who do not smoke. The damaging agent from the tar is carried to other parts of the body through the bloodstream. Wait, theres more bad news. Young women who smoke one pack a day or more for 12 years or longer increase the risk of getting cancer of the cervix by at least 12 times. Dear Ann Landers: I have the perfect solution to our horrendous traffic problem. No car should be allowed on the road unless it is fully Submit a picture before wedding The great increase in the number of area weddings in our makes it possible for The Tribune to publish only the engagement or wedding photograph, but not both. paid for.
