IMV'V ri The Sail Lake Tribune Thursday, February ;, las; Wrestling Club Offers Out - of - State Matches By Kurt Kidman Tribune Staff Writer J, The Sundance Wrestling Club was up to offer wrestlers the opportunity to compete outside of the state of Utah. -As its fourth season begins the club has more than accomplished that feat, and is now moving on to bigger things. Last year alone the club visited seven states, including a trip to the Grand Nationals in Lincoln, Neb. This year the club plans to visit at least that many states. The club is currently taking signups for the upcoming season. For $30, a wrestler of any age can join the club. Signups are being held at Granite High School weeknights from 6 to 8 p.m. Signups will continue until interest drops off or the club st ifc' Sfl --J- W is full. S Every Level of Wrestler "We take every level of wrestler there is, and there is no age limit, explained Dee Winderlin, one of the founders of the club. "We have advanced kids who we take to the naand we tionals, we have have kids who don't know a thing about wrestling. The only wrestler that cannot be on the team is one who currently competing on a high school team. ' Practices will begin Feb. 1, ? SVV i jp Pi' IJ X t' , , W. vv . , v.V y . & s yv?. We will also are hoping to have in the future some meets in Utah. In the past we have wrestled international teams, and in 1984 the Oklahoma team will be coming here. International Forms The club does not teach the traditional Utah high school form of wrestling. Instead of folkstyle wrestling the club teaches the more international forms of wrestling Greco-Roma- n and freestyle. 'TTjfJ D Greco-Roma- n wrestling mainly involves the upper body. There are no leg takedowns. In freestyle is closer to that taught in area high schools, except there is no riding of the opponent. In folkstyle you can lay on your opponent for as long as you want while trying to turn him over. In freestyle if you dont turn your opponent over in 2 seconds, both wrestlers start again on their feet. One of the most important aspects of joining the club Winderlin explained, is that winning isnt the most important thing. The wrestlers are supposed to learn, without the pressure that high school wrestling can put on a kid. The most impor-wit- h tant thing is that the wrestler has a good time. We are beginning to get some re- spect from the other clubs aroundthe nation, Winderlin said. We arent quite yet ready to compete the Iowa team, but we certain- ly arent pushovers. National Recognition One of the best ways for a wrestler to get national recognition is by placing high in the Grand Nationals. Wrestlers from the Sundance Club have been placing very high in the championships as of late. Last year in the zone competitions, 23 of 28 Sundance wrestlers placed in the top three. In the nationals, 17 of 28 wrestlers placed in the top six, and the club finished fifth out of 105 teams.
