In all more than 300 mentally retarded athletes competed in the Utah Winter Olympics. The BRC was alive last Friday as the competitors and hundreds of volunteers took part in the games. The Olympic flame burned brightly over the ice, but it didnt outshine the smiles on the competitors faces. No athletes have ever tried harder than those did in the Special Games. "I saw the most amazing thing happen in these games, something I've never seen happen before, said Murphy. "In a speed skating race the leader slipped and fell. The other two skaters in the race stopped and picked him up instead of speeding on past. These athletes have the same desire to win as any others, but they dont put the welfare of their fellow man second to winning. According to Murphy. Utah Spe- - cial Olympics is a state-wid- e program which provides year round therapeutic training, physical fitness and athletic competition for all mentally retarded children and adults. A lot of preparation goes into competing in the games. According to Murphy the skiers began their dry land training in early November. Many of the athletes participating in this year's games could very well be seen at the 1985 International Special Olympics Games in Park City. Virtually every state in the nation will have competitors in the international games, as will 43 foreign countries. "Our athletes are very dedicated and train very hard, Murphy said.
