| Show 8E The Salt Lake Tribune 1988 11 Wednesday May Y's Jerusalem Center Wins Mountain Fuel Proposes $2 Million Cleanup Mountain Fuel Supply has proposed a $2 million project to contain hazardous wastes buried beneath its operations center located on seven acres northwest of 100 South and 1000 West According to a cleanup plan prepared by the engineering firm of Dames And Moore Mountain Fuel will dig a trench around the wastes and fill it with a mixture of soil and clay This would create a 2400- loot-lon- g "slurry wall" around the wastes to keep them from being carried by groundwater into surrounding neighborhoods An existing cap of asphalt roads and cement driveways over the contaminated area would be improved to reduce the amount of water seeping into the ground The wastes are lying on a clay deposit which should prevent :the contamination from moving deeper into the ground and escaping beneath the walls area These would be Four wells would be drilled into the walled-of- f pumped occasionally to remove any groundwater which might accumulate near the wastes Water removed from these wells would be treated to remove contamination and then discharged into Salt Lake City's sewage system The contaminants would be taken to a hazardous waste disposal facility The company also proposes five wells just south of the operation to capture contaminants which have already been picked up by the groundwater The Utah Division of Environmental Health has scheduled a public hearing on Mountain Fuel's proposed cleanup plan for June 6 at 6 pm at the Chapman Branch Library 577 S 900 West Written comments on the plan will be accepted until June 20 They can be mailed to: Bureau of Solid and Hazardous Waste 288 N 1460 West Salt Lake City Utah 84116 Curt Burnett spokesman for Mountain Fuel said the company would like to begin the project on Aug 1 Work is expected to take less than six months to complete Owens whose trip to Israel was paid for by BYU said his role was "to get the attention of the Cabinet" on the lease issue The Cabinet approved the ground lease Sunday with stipulations that the center not engage in missionary work Owens a Mormon said he believes BYU President Jeffrey R Holland enlisted his help because he serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and because he has "good friends" in Israel and in the American Jewish community Last month at Owens' request committee Chairman Dante B Fasa sent a telegram to Shacell mir asking the Cabinet to OK the lease The telegram was sent just before Owens met with Israeli officials during a committee-sponsore- d trip to the Middle East Tribune Washington Bureau And The Associated Press The Israeli Cabinet has approved a lease for Brigham Young University's Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies despite opposition from x Jews who feared it would be a center for missionary activities In Washington Rep Wayne Owens praised Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir on Tuesday for showing "courage" in persuading his lease Cabinet to grant the ultra-orthodo- 49-ye- The Utah Democrat returned Tuesday from a weekend trip to Israel on behalf of BYU Yad L'Achim and other Orthodox Jewish groups vehemently oppose the center which they charge will be used by the LDS Church for proselyting Opponents of the center will ask Israel's parliament the Knesset for a vote of "no confidence" in the Shamir government Wednesday but the effort is expected to fail BIRTHDAY EDITH M DERBYSHIRE ' SUN BLOCK - S 11 1 advanced-placeme- Ith-grade- s ninth-grader- Craven said he considered some sages objected to by the Church of Saints Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y incomplete and inaccurate and he said additional materials will be used to balance those sections of the books "The textbook is not the curriculum" Craven told the board on Monday "The textbook is one element that supports the curriculum" Some Mormons have objected to the books because the ninth-grad- e text refers to the 19th century assault on a wagon train at Mountain Meadows in the Utah Territory in which Mormons killed 120 people without mentioning the persecution of Mormons leading up to the attack !
