The composer, Daniel Decatur Emmett, an Ohioan, was the first white minstrel to use burnt cork makeup in impersonating a Negro entertainer. As a member of Dan Bryants company, he composed and sang comic plantation songs, one of which was "I Wish I Was in Dixie Land. Introduced in New York .City in December 1859, it caught on immediately and was adopted by otheiminstrel companies. THE TERM Dixie was taken from Mason and Dixons invisible line which by compromise in 1820 established the division between free and slave territory, following the boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland and, going west, cut Missouri in half. The song, apparently coming from the lips of a displaced slave, wras nostalgic and though the words were little more than nonsense. Herman Arnold, a Montgomery musician, prepared an arrangement which he played in the inaugural parade of Jefferson Davis as president of the provisional Confederacy. When Davis was reinaugurated a year later in Richmond, Va , the band again played the equivalent to "Dixie official adoption as the national song of the south. IT WAS FIRST used as a war song in New Orleans in March, 1861, when a theatrical troupe at the Varieties Theater used it as a finale to accompany a Zouave drill. The tune was so light and rollicking that it was soon sung everywhere. When war came, the southerners sang "Dixie with nationalistic fervor, and the foolish words took on genuine meaning. Recognizing themselves as a separate people occupying their own territory and defending it against invasion, they saw special significance in the words of the chorus: "In Dixie Land, well take our stand To lne and die in Dixie.
