Show aiaagsiiaaBaisiaSKgBEsaiii5iiiijaig8saBfmmtm by Shula and, despite a plague of injuries to its linebackers, seemed to get stronger with each game this summer, the Dolphins went 6-- 0 in the preseason. MIAMI AT on the other hand, is a tar weaker team than the one which compiled winning records in the last three seasons. The biggest change, obviously, is the defection of O. J. Simpson. With the Juice in their lineup, the Bills were the highest scoring team in the NFL last year. Without him they are now a conservative, Buffalo, BUFFALO Monday, Sept. 137 P.M. Channel 4 When the Bills and Dolphins first began playing each other, their series was a benchmark or success for the old Amerie can League. The Bills were the champions of the AFL and they won on defense, something the league's critics claimed it didn't possess. Miami was the AFLs first expansion franchise, a symbol of its confidence. In that first year of the rivalry, 1 966, the Dolphins were looked upon as fungo practice for Buffalo. The first time they met In the rematch in Buffalo won, 53-2Miami the Bills scored a 29-- 0 shutout. Almost nothing has gone right for Buffalo since. The Bills haven't beaten Miami since Don Shula became the Dolphin coach in 1970. Thats 12 straight games. Not one player on Buffalo's active roster ever played in a winning game against the two-tim- 4. Dolphins. The last four games were wildly exciting things, with the Dolphins making dramatic big plays to break open the contests. Dont look for any radical change in the results when the two rivals play the first Monday night game of the season. Even the drama may be missing. The truth is that Miami has been rebuilt ball-contr- ol outfit. The passing attack was heavily diluted when Ahmad Rashad played out his option and signed with Seattle and then Coach Lou Saban was forced to trade another top receiver, J. D. Hill, for defensive help. Failure to make a beneficial trade for O. J. meant that the Bills were not able to acquire the reinforcements they need to become a contender in the Eastern Division of the American Conference. The breakdown on Monday nightss meeting: WHEN THE DOLPHINS HAVE THE BALL Miami scored only one touchdown on the ground in six preseason games, a dozen through the air. That doesn't mean that the running attack is suddenly flabby, just that Shula wanted to hone his passing game. Fred Solomon was a spectacular receiver in the earty part of the summer, but he'll miss the first part of the regular season due to a urinary disorder. But don't take that to mean that Bob Griese's receiving corps is depleted. Morris Owens had his first big chance when Solomon became sick and finished as the leading receiver in the exhibition season. Andre Tillman starts at tight end because of his superior blocking ability, but on Jim Mandich still comes in to make the killer catch. Benny Malone is a capable halfback and the fullback combination of Don Nottingham and Norman Bulaich scorched the Bills last year, but Griese may concentrate on his passing game for two third-and-for- g, reasons: 1 . The Bills, playing two rookies in their defensive line, have virtually no pass rush. They had only a half dozen sacks in six preseascn games, most of those on blitzes, which can be a fatal tactic against Gnese. 2. Buffalo is playing a rookie, Mario Clark, athlzfohcogner, and another rookie, Dan Jilek, at Right linebacker. WHEN THE BILLS HAVE THE BALL 0. J. may be gone, but his offensive line still remains. Buffalo or most of it gained more than 200 yards in each of its last four preseason games. No man could replace O. J. and the Bills are proving It by playing two men at his position. Rookie Darnell Powell and Roland Hooks are the hybrid. They follow their blocking well and get a lot of it. The big runner for the Bills now is d fullback Jim Braxton, a bruising ball carrier and outstanding blocker. Quarterback Joe Ferguson doesn't throw the long ball much any more since receivers. He he doesn't have long-ba- ll and Bob Chandler can a team to death, however. KEY MATCHUPS: DEN HERDER vs. ADAMS Donnie Green, the Bills' veteran right offensive tackle, couldn't report to the dub until they renegotiated his contract this year. The 242-poun- refused and he still hasn't repoaeof Adams, his replacement, is actually guard who started his pro career in Maimi Den Herder has been trouble for BuffalJ' ever since he came into the league. ? WHITE vs MOORE The Bills trade d J. D. Hill to Detroit for a dra d choice, then dealt a pick t( Cincinnati for defensive end Shermar White. White has been the only Buffaic lineman pressuring the passer. If Buffalo i: to prevent Griese from dessecting them White will have to find a route aroun Wayne Moore, who is recovering knes surgery. first-roun- first-roun- Howard Twille., TW1LLEY vs. CLARK may not start at wide receiver, but he'i almost certain to be dispatched into the game to show Mario Clark, the Bills' rookie left corner, some of the moves which kep him in the NFL for a decade despite lack o size and speed.
