Show The Salt Lake Tribune, Sunday, September 12, 1976 Less color can be more By Enca Wilson Why is it that so many stitchers feet that when they sit down to a project they must work with a whole handful of different color wools? Sometimes less is more. The oak and maple trees of autumn certain-l- y 4 are magnificent, with their festival of leaves in every color imaginable. But did you ever see an A ipen tree? It has leaves of yellow, and m the fall they turn every shade from pale to deepest gold. A totally different effect, but nature made sure it was also effective Working in "one color" really moans working in two, because there's always the background to consider. Blue and white are a particularly compatible combination I got my original inspiration for one of a blue my fas onto pillows from a piece of china and white willow pattern I stitched the dt sign in crewel, using wool and silk threads together. Settlers' Favorites The blues used to be a fax onto of the early coin-shape- d J American settlers they dyed them from indigo and the intensity of the blue depended upon how long the wool was left m the indigo pot. It was a complicated process, but the results were well worth it Speaking of blues, I did a quilt with all different prints of blue and white. I cut out shapes from those Indonesian and Indian bedspreads that are sold everywhere these days I then appliqued them on white linen and quilted it for a bedspread. The dark blue batiks made a striking, strong design. Great Project Some friends of mine, a husband and wufe needlovun king team, took upon themselves a formidable his and hers project a smashing wing back chair in shades of blue and white bargello. It was done m "flame stitch, the one that looks like a temperature chart, with all those wavy lines and ideas are perfect for sharp peaks. But bargello, because of the soft, subtle shading that makes it look almost iridescent. one-col- If you decide to undertake such a grand project in one Color, fa &t cut the pattern of your chair m mushn to fit y our chair. I like to sketch the general outline of marker. the design right on the muslin with a felt-ti- p It's such a help to visualize your finished design right on the chair and to get the mam outlines balanced first. g Use a tough, background fabric or if you are doing crewel, quilt the background after youve finished. Fine wools combined with silk or cotton can sometimes be longer lasting and harder hard-wearin- wearing than big bold ones because the stitches are smaller and closer together. Scrimshaw Stitched Ever hear of scrimshaw? Its those intricate paintings on whalebone, etched with black ink, that are for sale in many sea coast villages in New England Well, I translated senmshaw into stitches, and I loved the results simple black stitches depicting whaling scenes, harpoons and all, on a w hite background. Or you could turn the whole color with scheme around working on black linen white stitches. Why don't you get started on a simple, quick project? (The first step in disciplining yourself not to reach for all those other colors in your basket). You could embroider a hand towel, a nice plain white linen one. (Today the hand towel, tomorrow the wing chair.) one-col- Magic Chain Stitch 1. Thread needle with two constrasting threads. Come up at A. Form a loop and put the needle in again at A holding loop down with finger. Come up again at B. 2. Keeping the light thread under the needle, allow the dark one to go above it. Pul! the threads through and the light one will form a single chain stitch while the dark one will disappear behind the material. 3. Repeat the process, this time holding the dark under the needle and allowing the light to slip through. Continue to work in this way alternating dark with light or, if you wish, take two light stitches and two dark. This will give effect. Magic Chain in the diagram show'n must have chain Magic been created for one-colwork because you stitch it with contrasting threads m this case, two hues of one color. You could stitch magic chain as a border and stop there, or if y ou like, do a design m the center of the towel. Trace your design onto paper, then onto a piece of St itch witchery that fusible pellon web that's available m all stores now. Baste the Stitchwitchery onto your towel, then put the whole thing into a frame. Stitch right through the two layers, and when youre done, tear the Stitchwitchery away and there you have it: your first project all ready to hang in the bathroom for your next guests. one-col- & u tgt few t: ' . 1 ZV 1 sSisV'98. i v r ttW Nii4 vts r- r We re early this year! f witilni gi.
